First time posting. Have been reading and learning so much from this forum over the last year, and would like to thank you all with

the great information provided by you posters that have been through much already. My fiance, (he USC and I Canadian) were

just approved for our K-1 last Thursday at US consulate in Vancouver.

As stressed out over the last few month over this whole process, (sleepless nights, bad dreams) I have to confess, I cant

beleive how smoothly it all actually went. From first filing to getting approved (even with RFE) was 7 months total.. and a few months

of it were dragging our feet to get paperwork in, lol.

All of those still waiting, keep your chin up.. it will happen.. it is just alot of waiting for sure.

Now for a question.. (im sure ill have a few more as the process continues)

I actually had a E2 visa a few years ago, when US economy went bad, I sold my business and didnt renew the visa.

Now, years later I am approved for the K-1.

SO.. since I had an SSN for the E2 and know I will need one again when we are married and do next paperwork.. do I have to apply for new one, or

can I have the one I already have adjusted. (currently it says on bottom of SSN card, "not valid for work")

I would love to keep same number as I have great credit on my number and would benefit me for my new life in US.

Not sure if anyone has run into this before.

Keep up the good work with the information everyone! You dont realize how beneficial it is.

numbers are issued for life, you can and will need to get the card updated with your new name and immigration status, but the number remains the same

This is correct information. I had a SSN in the seventies and it was reinstated in 2011.

A SSN never expires, nor does the card.

I kept my ancient SS card with "Not valid for Employment" restriction on it or 19 years until I became a US citizen.

If you are seeking employment, it is your option to show your Green Card exclusively as it is a "List A" document (google "I-9 form) to prove (a) who you are and (b) that you are authorized to work in the United States . If you do not want to, you will never have to show your Green Card to anyone ever again; all that's needed is the number which, as beforementioned, never changes.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
