I filed for US citizenship on February 2011, having been married with a US citizen and lived in the US for 3 yrs (we live in the US since Nov 2007).

After few weeks I received the notice for biometrics and I went and did them.

Again after few weeks my online application status changed to "Testing and Interview", application was transferred to a local office (Chicago).

After this I haven't heard anything for months (processing times are advertised as 5 months).

Last week I called the 1-888 USCIS number and opened an inquiry for my case status, since it is way beyond the normal processing times.

Yesterday I received a letter from USCIS saying that my case was administratively closed on 07/22/2011. I can write to the USCIS office to ask them to reopen it.

What does that mean?

I haven't received any communication from USCIS. Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong?

Do you suggest me to try to hire an attorney or just try to keep going by myself?

Any suggestion is appreciated, thanks!

I guess you were invited for an interview but never got the invitation and did not go. So the case was closed!

I would make an infopass appointment and talk to an immigration officer what you can do now to reopen the case quickly.

Yes, make an infopass appointment as quick as possible and speak to an officer.

One thing most of us forget to think about is to inform the USPS about the new person living at that address especially if the last name is different--i.e. wife keeping maiden name. This happend to us during the AOS process. Received NOA1 for the I-485, but the NOA1 for the I-131/I-765 was returned and I had to call them to find out why. They said the USPS returned the notice. So I went to the local postoffice and ask them what was going on. "Is her name on the mailbox?" It would seem that some letter carriers will take it upon themsleves to returned property addressed letters if they do not recognize the name. This is not what their website states, but it is what happens. I checked this by sending a card to my wife with my work address as the return address and it arrived at my work several days later. I think our substutite carrier was the one returning letters addressed to her. Once I put her name in the mailbox, all letters arrived.

So your interview letter may have been returned and/or lost as they do not use any trackable method which to me is unforgivable given the importance of these letters.

I hope you get his all sorted out.

Dave
