Oakland Mayor Quan Apologizes to Occupy Oakland

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan attempted to speak Thursday at the Occupy Oakland encampment outside City Hall. After she was denied a chance to speak, she recorded a video message and posted it on her Facebook page.

Jean Quan: "What I wanted to say to you tonight is how deeply saddened I am about the outcome on Tuesday. It’s not what anyone hoped for. I understand it’s my responsibility and I want to apologize to everyone about what happened."

At the White House, Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked about the police crackdown in Oakland.

Jay Carney: "We understand the frustrations that are being expressed, specifically with regard to the need to make sure that Main Street and Wall Street operate by the same set of rules, and the general frustration with the need for jobs and economic growth that creates opportunity for middle-class Americans. And certainly we have a long and noble tradition of free expression and free speech in this country. We also — it’s also important that laws are upheld and obeyed. But that’s a broad view. I haven’t had a discussion about specific cities or instances with the President."

What they fail to mention: She was booed when she tried to speak, and forced to retreat back into City Hall to avoid injury when the crowd began to surge and physically threaten her.

They obviously think no different to the Syrian gov and would use live rounds if they thought they could get away with it

Only in biblical America could people think that apologizing made any difference - they come on telly and weep and everyone says "that's ok then seeing as you have apologized"

If the object was to stop people getting into a public building, that could be done without a para military assault on the crowd, which in itself is very dangerous - panicked crowds can cause a lot of injury

I have experience of a thousand people throwing beer cans etc at me and its no fun - but launching a para military attack on them is a dangerous escalation as we will see

Next time, the protesters will be equipped with all sorts of defensive equipment and tactics and likely some offensive ones too

The police will always be outnumbered, so escalating violence is a bad idea.

Uh, I saw her calmly walking back into city hall last night...people were yelling but I didn't see people trying to attack her.

I just know what I saw on KTVU this morning. They showed her going through the glass doors, then the protesters trying to get inside. It was only a few seconds clip.

Downtown Oakland is usually a nice place, even in the early morning hours. Jerry Brown did a good job cleaning up the town. Downtown San Francisco is the scary place. Homeless white people everywhere.

I drove through Oakland a few times when i got lost and i haven't gone back ever again a scary sight in itself.
