Do black powder flintlock muskets count? I used to own a really nice reproduction 1777 French Charleville black powder musket that I used to use in War of 1812 re-enactments when I did a soldier impression to get the feel of being on the battlefield. I sold it to my re-enactment unit before I moved to the US rather than deal with the hassle of importing a firearm into the US, especially as I didn't anticipate having much opportunity to use it down here in Civil War country. I generally fired gunpowder cartridges without projectiles but did fire it live a few times as well. While they are notoriously hard to aim and actually hit anything, ("don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!") I was successful in some target competitions. It was fun, but I've been there, done that - even got the t-shirts!

btw - 2012 is the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and there will be a lot of great re-enactments in and around the Great Lakes area of North Eastern US and Quebec/Ontario . They are lots of fun so if you get a chance, try and attend one. I really miss my re-enactments and am going to see if I can get to a few events during this significant year. I still have all my period reproduction clothing - just have to dig it out of storage. :)

It would have been the same to import your musket as importing your dishes. You can order a new one one and have it delivered to your door by UPS.

There should be several reenactments and celebrations here as Burlington/Plattsburg were the scene of several battles in the War of 1812. (not to mention the French and Indian War and Revolution) The cannons are still in place in Battery Park overlooking the lake. The sunken ships are still favorite sites for divers in Lake Champlain. Burlington was originally a French fort with the purpose of protecting the southern access to Montreal, along with Ticonderoga, Plattsburg and a couple others up the lake. There is one fort, now barely in Canada, right at what is now the border at the lakefront. It has survived intact. It was quite a gauntlet at that time to run up the lake and into the Richileu river to get to the St Laurent in Montreal.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
