Ok so i am baptised catholic and my Fiancee is catholic, i was previously married and divorced Civily only and from what i have read the church doesnt recognize this as a marriage? my question is if i can still marry in the catholic church as my new future wife wants to do this and bear in mind we will also have a Civil ceremony first and later would like to do the Church ceremony in the Philippines.

My Proposal to kristine!!! :)

OK.. first.. you have never been married in the CATHOLIC church.. so no worries there.. Civil Divorce does not matter..

HOWEVER>.

you were baptised.. CHECK 1!! what about first communion and confirmation?? that is check 2 & 3!?

you need all 3 sacraments before you can be married in the catholic church..

if yes to all three.. GO FOR IT

my better half is divorced Civily BUT she needs ANULLMENT from the Church that her FIRST marriage was not in Good Faith *he was a drunk*..

So we can get Married Civil no problem.. BUT Church wedding would have to wait until she gets it taken care of..

*you petition to annul at your parish.. BUT if they Deny you.. then you, appeal to the VATICAN!! that is not cheap!! like $1000!!

SOOOOOO.. do you have all three sacraments?!

if not.. then you can Enroll at a Catholic Church for RCIA *adult religious class*.. they normally start in August.. BUT i called around and a church let me in Jan... and i was Confirmed that Easter.. i already had the Other two..

ps.. the RCIA classes are for people coming to the CHURCH, Converting.. or Missing their Sacarments..

I would suggest you contact the Parish priest you plan to mary at and ask him, there is some variance in how different diocese do things.

Yeah i know i still have to do 2 and 3 but not gonna do it unless its possible for me to marry her in the church, so my next question is why do i have to have my civil union annulled by the church if my civil union isn't recognized by the church?

I believe you can. You just have to get marriage license and present it to them. The waiting time is longer though, you have to wait for one month to be married in the church

well, also the Priest may want to counsel you first and also.. the church may already be booked.. so its not something you can probably just walk up and do..

The church requires at least one month before you do the ceremony. Reason is they will display the upcoming nuptial in public just in case someone who objects to the marriage shows up. Not really having to do with if the church is full or not.

This is where the "I object to the marriage" scene common in Filipino movies :wow:

i dont know about marrying in church after a divorce, but i think they allow it in some cicumstances, the best way to know is to contact your local parish (that's what we did) and about the first communion, confirmation and even sacrament of penance, im not quite sure, but the priest my fiance talked to said it's okay, we just have to present our newly issued baptismal certificates.. it'' be best if you contact the parish you belong to before your fiance flies to US so that you know what you need.. in our case the US priest asked my parents to sign an affidavit with the signature of my local parish priest with seal..

Our church required a 6 month notice to get married and we had to do a ton of stuff! Better get a move on!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png
