I just saw a 20 pound bag of Jasmine rice at our daughter's house. I assume she got it from Walmart Grocery as that is the only place she goes around here.

Now in need of a new rice cooker (appliance, not wife). Any suggestions on which cookers are best? Rin preferred a certain brand of cooker in Thailand that isn't available in the USA (also can't bring one back due to voltage difference). Her main complaint about the one I have is rice cannot be left in the cooker overnight on "hold warm" without burning.

I was bucking alfalfa hay bales for wages, and I was pulling a slip with a tractor, and I got it stuck in the sand. I unloaded the bales, and it made the boss unhappy with me. He told me that he would not have unloaded those bales of hay for all the rice in China. That was the first time I heard that saying, and I thought to myself, well I probably should have tried harder to get that tractor unstuck, and yes there is a lot of rice in China!

Seen those at the asian store in Memphis. Wish we could test drive one. Not sure how some rice cookers are $25 and some are $250+. Doesn't seem to be much in between.

My Filipina unit thrives on rice, and I learned long ago that good rice is so much better. My mom was a good cook, but straight american food, and the few times we had rice it was minute rice with some wretched canned chow mein and canned crunchy noodles. I had to sneak-feed it to the dog under the table or spit it out on my napkin and smuggle it out to the bathroom and flush it down the toilet.

We bought some horrific ####### from Sam's Club that took us three years to finish off because we only ate it when we ran out of Thai Golden Star Prime Grade Jasmine. Sam's sells that too, and it's pretty reasonable. The awful stuff was grown in the US. We had some Calrose we didn't like as much either. This Jasmine is better and worth paying for.

They sell something in a much smaller sack, a burlap sack, also from Thailand. It's pretty expensive. Not sure if it is worth the extra money. Can't remember the name but it is blue ink on a burlap bag, made to look like it is for the King of Thailand you know.

You can't buy it in a regular grocery store because they sell it in three sizes: Too small, way too small, and by the thimble-full.

What do you buy?

Lucky Elephant at Costco. It's Jasmine rice. 25 bucks for 50 lbs.

Just as much as good burger is hard to come by in the Philippines, good rice is hard to come by here in the US. Even in Asian stores. There aren't many good varieties. The only good one are Jasmine rice. I hope the US considers importing different kids of rice from the Philippines. LOL. Sinandomeng, Biniding, Milagrosa and all those good stuff that is cheaper than Jasmine rice but just as good.

Rin is definitely a Three Ladies rice person. Learned more about rice in the past five years than I ever thought I would. Discovered I had an inadequate rice cooker to begin with. Also, she varies the amount of water she adds depending on the age of the rice. When a new crop arrives (shown on the side of the bag) she alters the amount of water in the rice cooker until she gets the right texture/taste in the final rice. Newer rice takes less water.

Now in need of a new rice cooker (appliance, not wife). Any suggestions on which cookers are best? Believe me, it's not with the cooker, it is with the rice. Your wife might even be familiar on how to cook rice without rice cooker. LOL

She makes terrific rice with or without the rice cooker. Her complaint is how long it can be left on "warm" in the cooker after it is finished. The cooker she had in Thailand the rice could be left overnight and used the next morning. The one we have now, she has to turn off and then reheat the rice in the microwave the next day.

We turn the warmer off. The rice doesn't do well in a warmer through the day. So we microwave what we use for supper if we make it in the morning.

Most seem to like the Jasmine style. Ha! Thanks to the person reminding me about rice-a-roni. I like it and I know she will too. And yeah, mixed wild rice and brown and even the flavored kinds now and then for variety.
