I know my son who is 7-years old is not eligible for a SSN not unless he have EAD or GC. We will file for AOS soon but we want him to be covered in my husband's health insurance right away for some medical reasons. Now, its a must to have SSN for him to be covered in my husband's insurance and he doesn't have one, so its a no go. Are there any ways we can do so he'll be covered? I heard about ITIN, how does it work in regards for health insurance? He's been sick most of the time here and its cost a lot without insurance.

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

My insurance provider accepted the alien number A- until a social security number was obtained.

Thank you. I will tell my husband about this.

This is an issue that is specific to your husband's insurance carrier. Immigration laws and Social Security laws has nothing to do with it. It just depends on what the insurer wants as proof of identity.

By law, the insurer cannot demand an SSN. However, it can complicate things if you decline to provide the SSN.

Ask the insurer if they will accept another form of identification.

Go to the social security office he is old enough to get a ssn

There's no minimum age to get an SSN. Newborn infants can get an SSN. It's a question of eligibility - not age. Until he has an EAD or green card then his eligibility for an SSN hasn't been established yet.

I got my step-daughter on my insurance by just entering zeros for her SSN on my employer's online benefits enrollment system. I updated it when she got her Social Security card. In the OP's case, I'd contact the employer's benefits administrator and see what they can do to get the kid covered.

This makes sense. Thanks!

Right. I told my husband about this. He already submitted the paperwork and he leave it blank for my son's SSN. I hope they wont reject it. Thanks for the info.
