This wasn't a "first step of approval" ... it just means they have your package. They don't go through the documents, just process the payment and send it off to VSC or CSC for adjudication. Once your petition gets adjudicated, that's when you'll find out whether or not there is an RFE.

It is still good news though, I'm not trying to rain on your parade. It means you've sent it to the right location, made out the check/money order properly, and everything seems to be in order. :)

All notices from the USCIS are on form I-797c. Someone on VisaJourney invented the terms "NOA1" and "NOA2" but they really have no official meaning.

The first notice you recieve after filing your petition is normally just a receipt notice. The second notice could be an RFE (request for evidence) or your petition approval. Unfortunately, many use the term "NOA2" when they really should use the term "Approval Notice".

I've seen you mention this in numerous threads, and I think it just confuses people. Yes, technically, the NOA2 could be an RFE but it is, as you said, commonly used to refer to the approval itself. An RFE is simply called an RFE here on VJ. Simple enough.

My fiance got an text and Email NOA1 that reads like this.....

Dear Applicant/Petitioner:

Your USCIS application/petition has been received and routed to the California Service Center for processing. Within 7-10 days by standard mail you will receive your official Receipt Notice (Form I-797) with your Receipt Number WAC**********. With the official Receipt Notice (Form I-797) you may visit www.uscis.gov where you can check the status of your application using My Case Status. We suggest you wait until you have received your Form I-797 before checking My Case Status.

This confirmation provides notification of the date USCIS received your application/petition. This notice does NOT grant any immigration status or benefit. You MAY NOT present this notice as evidence that you have been granted any immigration status or benefit. Further, this notice does NOT constitute evidence that your application remains pending with USCIS. The current status of your application/petition must be verified with USCIS.

PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE

Any use for that WAC number? Can we use that to check the status of the application or there's another number when the snailmail copy arrives?

Just to feed my curiosity, I run that WAC number in https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/Dashboard/CaseStatus.do. It highlighted the blue and round "Initial Review" status.

Initial Review

On October 4, 2011, we received this I129F PETITION FOR FIANCE(E), and mailed you a notice describing how we will process your case. Please follow any instructions on this notice. You will be notified by mail when a decision is made, or if the office needs something from you. If you move while this case is pending, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or contact our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.

During this step, USCIS initiates the background checks of the applicant/petitioner and identifies issues that may need to be addressed either during an interview or by asking the applicant/petitioner to submit additional information or documentation. USCIS reviews the applicant's/petitioner's criminal history, determines if there are national security concerns that need to be addressed, and reviews the application/petition for fraud indicators.

Happy New Year!

Yes, the case number comes in handy when checking your status online as well as if you ever have to call DOS about the status of your petition after it's been approved. That number stays with your petition until you get a new number issued for the embassy stage.
