Hey everyone

Hope your all hanging in. NOT sure if I'm putting this is the correct place but I'm most familiar here...lol..

My hubby Gary has been in the States for 3 weeks today. Should his social be here , like NOW....we checked on the I130 to get the social but we've read that sometimes this gets messed up and you need to go to the local SS branch. Does anyone know about this..what is the general time frame? Gary has gotten his welcome to America letter already.

Thanks for any help

Val :-)

Funny you mention this .

I just came from my Local SS Office because my wife SS # has not arrive in the house after 1 month in the US .

I look at her Docs and is clear that she ask for the Number during the process.

Just go to your local office . They Told us that it will take another 5 to 10 days for her to get the documents . After the man from the SS office made us fill a new petittion and did some work in their system

Good Luck

Yeppers! Just make a trip to your local SS office with your documents and straighten it out.. Should only take about a week to have the card.

Our SS office elaborated a little and said that often, mail carriers return correspondence from SSA as they may not recognize your new spouse's name as a legitimate user of your postal addy. You may as we did want to leave a note for your mail carrier or at your post office that mail with your spouse's name is to be expected.

Hi Val! *waves*

Here on VJ, it's suggested that after waiting 3 weeks from POE and the SSN doesn't arrive, then it's safe to go to a local SSA office and apply there. That's what I had to do. I waited three weeks for my SSN, but it never came in the mail, despite checking it off on the form. So, I brought my passport, birth certificate, and marriage certificate. The person there asked me a bunch of questions (instead of filling out a form, she just asked the questions and put them into her computer). Ten days later, my SSN arrived in the mail. So, I'd suggest going to the local SSA office either tomorrow or Friday!

Hey Lindsey, it's Gary here (waves back!).

Yep, I think that's what we're going to do - I received my Welcome letter on Friday last, and my GC is in production according to the USCIS status. I managed to get through on the 'phone to our local SSA office, and they told me I was not yet showing on their database...though the girl didn't seem to understand my question, so I am not sure whether I am or not. I think I shall wait for the mail today - three weeks, and then go to Leesburg tomorrow with my ID stuff...I heard somewhere that ticking off the checkbox on the DS230 is only 62% accurate...ughh....I hope I don't end up with two SSN's!!

Where did they get 62% from? laughing.gif

And don't worry about getting 2 SSNs. I've NEVER seen that happen here to anyone. You've waited the appropriate amount of time, so it's safe to go and apply. Just explain your situation (came on a US visa, etc) and they'll help you along. If for whatever reason there's a problem and can't apply for you at that time, they'll say something, so no worries about getting two.

Hey Lindsey

I don't know as I didn't ask. I just went in, explained that I had come on a US immigrant visa, was told to wait 3 weeks from POE for the SSN to arrive in the mail and if it didn't to go to a local SSA office and apply there. And the lady just started asking me questions. I'm guessing if there was a problem or she couldn't apply for me, then she would have said something.

Hello Gary

I have been in the states for 3 weeks too - i got here on the 6th september. i haven't had my welcome to America letter yet and haven't had my green card or ssn either but was wondering how you saw your USCIS status as reading green card in production. Did you use your original USCIS case number? I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks and hope you are settling in well.

To track your green card progress, you use a new USCIS number that's included in the welcome letter/receipt notice.

And since it's been 3 weeks for you, get your butt to a local SSA office and apply for a SSN!

Hey Debz. Congrats on your approval and arrival - I arrived on the 7th September in Orlando. On the 23rd I got a welcome letter from the USCIS Texas (ughh), and a receipt number. I also got a notice of action letter. This allowed me to check the progress of my GC on the USCIS website, and since the 23rd Sept, I have had ree notices - two to say my GC is in production, and 1 to say I am approved LOL!

The SSN seems to be messed up. I ticked the box asking for an automatic SSN, but so far nothing. I am probably going into the SSA office today to see if I am on the USCIS SAVE database - it's been over three weeks since entry and I need to work. WIll let you all know what happens....

I am sure you'll be getting your welcome letter soon - where was your POE? Maybe they are bsier than Orlando...best of luck.

Hello

I came in through Minneapolis on 6th september. It was very casual coming in through there. Thanks for the reply about the welcome letter. I bet you got the horrors when you saw texas was dealing with things for you!. I ticked the box too and actually went in to the social security office already but as i wanted to change my name to my masrried name as well, i was advised to wait for my greencard before applying for my ssn in case it might confuse things! I really want my ssn so i can get my drivers licence and i was lucky enough to be offered a job in a vets surgery but i can't do anything till these things arrive. If my welcome letter doesn't come by week 4 who do you think i should contact? Any ideas welcome and hope you get a job soon.

I think your welcome letter will be here any day now. If not, I would contact the USCIS with your LND case number and ask whether they have any further information. I went to my local SSA today, and applied for my card (even though I ticked the DS230 box). The lady, who could barely speak English, took my application quietly and informed my I was on their database. She said my card would be here within 2 weeks. (I understand it's more like 5 days). I am expecting my Green Card anytime, because it went into production on the 26th September.

It seems the SSN is the problem - once that is done, THEN we can become living, breathing Americans. Until I get this, I can't work, drive, buy a car or anything.

Orlando POE was laid back - it took me 25 minutes to get through after all the madness of the last year - just 25 minutes!

Keep us informed as to how things are going with your SSN and GC, and the best of luck to you.
