Excuses for a day off for the medical

In order to get a job while I was home applying CR-1 I had to lie about my circumstances so they wouldn't know I was only going to be here temporarily...

I work in an office where only one person in the team can be off unless there's a really good reason for it. I'm going to book my medical soon and I'm worried I'll have to take the dates they offer me, regardless. Now obviously I can't tell them the truth, so what's a good reason to be going up to London on a vital, can't-cancel trip? I was thinking of making it medical-related, so they'd be too scared to ask more details, but I can't just say doctor's appointment as I live like 30 miles away and it would seem strange.

A sicky is out of the question, I don't want to screw them over too much!

Ready for my grand ol' timeline? Alrighty then!

I'd (mostly) tell the truth: you have to see a specialist doctor in London for some tests. Nothing life threatening, but it is urgent so can't be postponed.

They let you have choice in dates and you can change it too with some notice. It's the interview that's less flexible.

Thanks guys, that's great - I've booked it now, they were quite flexible which worked out really well for me, and work didn't even ask for a reason after all! I panic too easily!

And congrats on the case complete Scott! (Saw it in your sig)

Good luck with the medical and interview, when I had my interview earlier this year I got a 3 month sick note from work. While I was over here preparing the wedding details I was on full pay from my employer. I would not have done this if it was a decent place to work at. When my sicknote had almost expired, I sent a letter of notice that I had left at my brothers to send in when the time was ready. One more thing you should do before you leave, download a P85 form from the tax website and fill it in along with the P45 and P60.

You absolute beaut. I've been struggling to find info on claiming back my tax, and I really need it because there's a chunk of money in overpaid taxes that will go towards a deposit on a place, a car etc. Thanks!!

Here is a tax refund calculator, so you can work out the rebate you are due to: http://www.taxundo.com/Calculator.html

Hope this helps
