Hi!

If you're pregnant, It's not good to do Chest X-Ray because that can kill your baby because of Radiation. But you need to ask a doctor before going to your medical exams. when i had my medical examination, They told me i am not pregnant which is good, and they also said if i was pregnant it would be a disaster and i would have to wait after i get the baby then do the medical examination.

My husband and i before we married we were fiance, so we were hoping everything will be alright. So we did it! :) But trust me Pregnancy during your medical examination it depends which country you are. I am from Mauritius island and I went to do my interview in Kenya. So it's different there. So probably it's different in your country too.

I wish you all the best and wish you all the success in your life !!

Though it is not recommended to get X-rays while pregnant a one time deal will NOT harm the baby. When you go to get the chest X-Ray they will give you one of the heavy jackets to cover your belly to avoid any unnecessary exposure. But don't worry this one time exposure will not affect the baby at all!

Most diagnostic X-rays don't expose the fetus to high enough levels of radiation to cause a problem. It is true, though, that the greater your exposure is to radiation, the greater the risk could be to your baby.

While fetal exposure over 10 rads (the unit of measurement for absorbed radiation) has been shown to increase the risks for mental retardation and eye abnormalities, you needn't worry. It's rare for a single X-ray or group of diagnostic X-rays to exceed 5 rads.

For example, the amount of radiation that a baby gets from a mother's dental X-ray is only 0.01 millirad. Since a rad is equal to 1,000 millirads, one would have to have 100,000 dental X-rays for the baby to receive just one rad. Other estimated fetal doses are 60 millirads for a chest X-ray, 290 millirads for an abdominal X-ray, and 800 millirads for a computerized tomographic (CT) scan.

To put this in perspective, during the normal course of a pregnancy you and your baby are exposed to about 90 to 100 millirads of natural radiation from the sun and earth.

Do a little research to make yourself educated!! It is nothing to worry about

Don't know about other people but at my Xray they had me wear a heavy apron thing around my waist area even though i'm not pregnant to protect the rest of my body during the chest Xray.

They will give you a something to shield your tummy and protect your baby during the X-ray procedure. This is also the reason why they will ask if you're pregnant and/or have a pregnancy test before they do any medical procedure/exam or vaccination.

Good Luck on your journey!

My wife was pregnant in 1970 before they did ultra sounds, and the doctor thought she had one huge baby that they were going to have to take c serian Sp? She knew she had twins, but the doctor disagreed with her because he could only hear one heart beat. What was happening was that the twins' heart beats were beating in sync, making is possible to only hear one heart beat. She finally talked the doctor into doing an xray, even though he didn't want to do that because of the risk of damage to the baby/babies. Well, he did the xray and discovered she did have twins, and the xray didn't seem to harm the babies. They have lived over 40 healthy years. I am not saying that there is not a risk, nor am I saying that it would not harm another baby, just that it didn't harm our babies. So if the object is to xray the chest with the belly protected there shouldn't be a problem, because our xray was of the belly with the babies in it, and there wasn't damage.

From nursing perspective here, You can always wear a Lead thyroid collar, apron and skirt to protect the developing fetus. I'm sure the staff will make you wear this personal protective gear.

I am not sure how SLEC operates for pregnant women in terms of their radiography policies. If the lady said it will be safe, I would assume they will take proper precautions before they do the procedure on you.

It's still your call though if you want to have your x-ray done or wait until you give birth if the safety of your child comes first.

I was 5 months 3 weeks pregnant (June 10, 2011) when I had my medical and yes, it is required that you undergo XRAY, otherwise, they won't let you continue with the other procedures, meaning you will not complete your medical until you gave birth. So I had to do it, I asked my OB about it, and she said it would be fine, I just need to wear double lead protective lead gown during the procedure, and also, "the rays" are not directed towards your abdomen anyway, it is more directed to the chest. After a month (July 12, 2011) had my baby's congenital anomaly scan and 4d scan, everything is normal.

X-rays when pregnant are not safe, that is true. But chest x-rays, from what I read, cause a minimal risk. My wife had a chest x-ray early in her pregnancy, and I was alarmed when I found out. To me it was insane that she would have done that. But the baby turned out very smart and strong. But it sure did scare me about her x-ray. Apparently the shield blocks the risidual affects. I would listen to whatever they say at SLEC. I am sure they wont put you through anything that would be a risk to your baby, seeing as how they have that situation time after time after time. Or you can just wait till you give birth, whichever makes you happiest.

thank you everyone for you kind reply. the thing is slec will ask me to write a letter saying that i will not hold them liable if anything happens to me and my baby. if they're sure its safe, they should be liable :(

I was sort of hesitant at first, then the radiologist told me that if I am not going to give consent, I will not be allowed to go through everything at all, meaning not do my medical altogether. Note that if you don't do it, you also have to cancel your interview because you will not be interviewed without the medical. And I also asked my OB about it she said it would be okay. So I wrote the letter and gave consent for the procedure.
