Ahh hun! I haven't been on here in a long time but just wanted to say hi! I totally understand where you're coming from. When I read your post, I felt like I was reading something I've written myself. I feel like I've been in a bubble for the last 18 months but... things are slowly getting better. My mom (who has never flewn in her life, not even to our wedding) came over last month to visit and I finally got somewhere with my Esthetician licence and had it approved a few weeks ago to work in the state of New York!!!! I can't drive though and there is literally nothing around here that I can get to. I sit at home every day working on my business (I make bridal accessories on Etsy) while my husband goes to work, I haven't made any friends and am really lonely. But, I want to start applying for part time jobs in the new year and see where that takes me. I was so confident back home (I'm from Birmingham) and moving here has totally changed me into an introverted, shy, quiet person. I hope things continue to improve. I don't have any good advice to give, I just wanted to say hi and that you're not alone! :D

All the best!

I am applying still for work unfortunly its just factory work i am hoping to hear something soon, beening as christmas is just round the corner. I never been confident but i never felt so scared to do stuff or even speak to ppl ( scared of getting lost and not understanding ppl )than i do since living here. I do feel my life in england was less complicated but i guess its what i was used too. I sometimes wonder if i have a disorder and should i talk to someone.

I am learning to drive, not driving as much as id like, but i think i am doing ok lol, havent crashed or run anybody over so far lol good sign :).

My husband has given me a book to read called "How to win friends and influence pleople", i think he is hoping it will help me, but i dont know lol.

How did u get into making bridal accessories?? did u take a class?? My mother in law took a class at Michaels to make these barefoot sandals ( she made some for my beach wedding ).

Hi yorkshire,

I moved to Southern Cali almost 3 years ago and to date I have only 1 friend I made on my own (as in not my husband's friends) and that friend is because she was a temp at my job who also took a kickboxing class I was in and she and I got along really well (but she doesn't work there anymore or take kickboxing... so no and I only see that friend maybe 1 a year...) It is a hard process to start over in a new place. I consider myself a social person, and it is still pretty darn hard to befriend someone because of people different comfort bubbles, and also because I have a slightly different accent, I get treated like a dumb foreigner. :S But, things do get better, it's just really slow.

As far as driving goes, the only suggestion I can give to motivate you to drive is to find an amazing place you like and want to go to there a lot (while your partner doesn't ever want to go there. :D) For me, that was going to art classes, exercise classes, shopping at malls that he hates. I eventually wanted to go more often than he did, so I forced myself to drive and learn the area. I have a pocketbook full of notes that I carry with me that lists contact numbers of the stores I frequent, just in case I get lost, I can call them and ask how to get there... Yes, that annoys the person on the other end, but they'll still tell me. :)

But yeah, things will get better, I promise you that.

And that's very cool, I'm happy for your wife. But Los Angeles is a very different case due to the population size and culture. Ie. My cousin has lived in LA for ten years since she moved with her work, and her only friends are through work, which even then took awhile because depending on coworkers used to everyone moving around a lot so no one wants to really get too close.

To add to what Calibob mentioned about the dog volunteering, to avoid dealing with dogs being put to sleep, you can volunteer with rescue organizations instead to walk dogs, help with community events, even work up to driving a dog to vet or home visits when you've got the driving thing down pat. :)

That is awesome! Just having a pet around to make noise in the home and to keep company makes such a huge difference in mood & is a great distraction (more distracting if they're not potty trained... :D)

Hi, i havent been on here for a while either. My dad visited last month for 3 weeks, it was great but now i feel like something is missing and spending my days alone.

I havent been able to sort out my beauty quification, when i finally found the information on what i had to do, i had to pay hunderds of dollars just to get them converted and see if i had completed the right hours for my nail diploma, but i feel now its been along time that i might as well just go back to school if i want to do it again but money is the issue. Now im thinking do i really want to do it again seen as i havent had much look so far, i keep trying to find things that interest me but not sure if im worthy to do it, im not the brainest of people lol. i am a artistic person, i love making stuff like cards, scrapbooking/flyers and drawing but i havent had any training or have any degrees, i try to think how i could put that to use in a job but i can never think of anything.

I have met two very cool girls though, one, thank God, lives here, but the other one is in San Francisco. I am planning to make a trip put there in spring.

Give me an update :)

Happy new year, may it be our best yet :)

Hi everybody, I just saw this group and absolutely had to make an entry. My fiance lives in Huntington Beach, Orange Country and I will be moving there as soon as my visa gets through(huntington, santa ana, costa mesa, irvine, laguna area). I have visited many times and also studied in the US, so I do have a network there. However, mostly on the East Coast. I'd love to meet other foreigners in the area and maybe make some new friends as soon as I get there. I spent 2 months during last summer there, and at times, when Aaron was working,it did get a little lonely. I will be writing my master thesis for the first 6 months, which should help me survive until I get my work permit ready lol. But it would be nice to meet some new friends as well :)

/Christine
