Work before OPT without getting paid

Hello,

I have a job offer in my hand and have applied for an OPT but have not yet received the offer letter. I understand that I cannot start working for the company without getting paid and get compensated for it later.

But is it possible to simply 'work' without getting paid at all? I mean, there would be no official record of me working for the company until the date of me actually receiving the EAD card. Is such a scenario legal?

Sorry if this has already been discussed. I would appreciate if you could point me to the relevant thread.

No you can not.
