Maybe there are a few ideas you think would work...Discuss.

Easy. Roll back the Bush tax cuts. Back in Clinton's days we had a balanced budget. The tax cuts have easily been the single largest contributing factor to the deficit.

Votes that pushed us into the red

In the debate over the nation's rising debt, rhetoric trumps reality. In January 2001, the U.S. budget was balanced for the first time in decades and the Congressional Budget Office was forecasting surpluses totaling $5.6 trillion by 2011. A decade later, the national debt is larger, as a percentage of the economy, than at any time in U.S. history except for the period shortly after World War II.

The impact of three policies

So what happened?

In classic Washington style, neither party wants to take responsibility. “Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said in April.

“Republicans made the contradictory promises that cutting taxes would lead to higher revenues and would force lower spending,” House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer shot back in a speech later the same month. “They did neither.”

The reality falls somewhere in between. In fact, 75 percent of the members currently serving in Congress voted for at least one — and in most cases more than one — of three policies that contributed to fully one-third of the $12.7 trillion swing from projected surpluses to real debt: President George W. Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, funding for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and President Obama's 2009 stimulus bill.

Right away abolish most Federal departments outright. Go to the Pentagon and let them know they are to draw up plans to close down all overseas bases and bring the troops home in 6 months. I will roll the government back to the year 2000 levels right away. I will announce no more subsidies to any corporations. No Federal monies for any research except for armaments or electronic warfare. Any and all foreign aid is stopped right away. All stimulus money is to be paid back right away. I will do everything to get a balanced budget amendment out of the houses and to the states to hopefully ratify.

Then after this I will abolish the IRS. Will then go to the pentagon and tell them to ready plans for the invasion of Mexico. Get ready to abolish the Federal reserve permanently. Start legislation to reduce business taxes but increase any on imports where corporations have moved their manufacturing facilities. The business tax reduction apply to any corporations that manufacture their products here or our neighboring countries. I will then go to these same neighbors and apologize for our past transgressions and say we are only going to invest in our own or their countries and create the most hospitable environment possible. Hopefully their reply will be gracias and welcome.

This is a start though.

Yep, all Americans and American businesses that collected $350BN worth of tax breaks and credits will happily write their checks to refund those monies. That'll get the economy rolling right quick. Well, that and the trade war you are instigating. Brilliant plan!

It is interesting though, that even with the Bush tax cuts, we were on the path to a balanced budget again toward his last years- until all Hell broke loose.

Wait, why are we invading Mexico?

They have invaded us. They kill Americans almost daily. The Mexican government has pretty much sanctioned the invasion and lawlessness and is complicit to where the corruption is hurting us here in this country. But I said before that the Pentagon will draw up plans for an invasion and get ready for one. I never said we had to actually invade. Fear usually will be a great motivator even though in Mexico's case I doubt they can ever reform. Of course since I will be over turning the war on drugs and legalizing usage then their most profitable exports will be pretty much worthless.

The only way to control our borders in this case is to seize the border and clean house. Troops will have to be stationed permanently to stop the invasion underway now and I will make sure that will not happen.

In this case whether there is tax cuts or not is irrelevant. It is OVER spending that has brought us to this. Clinton (And I give a hand to him) did it by decimating the military and using the surplus to pay down the debt. Only in this case we not only have bases and troops all over the world we are in wars that are sucking us dry. We all know it is either a new type of crusades we are in or it it all about the oil and the control of oil. We marched in there and we can march back out. The U.S. can and will survive without the mid east. Europe and China has a lot more at stake in that region. We need to concentrate on our own region.

No.

Revenues kept rising when the taxes were cut.

it's EXTREMELY ingenuous to believe that had taxes been higher we wouldn't be in this mess at all.

It has been and always will be the spending.

If we had Clinton level spending and still had the "Bush tax cuts" (which are really Obama's btw now) we'd be just fine.

It has been and always will be the spending.

Without the line-item veto, Bush passed every single piece of legislation until January 2007 when the Democrats took over. Every law, every bit of spending, etc.. all signed into law without even a second blink. THAT was your primary problem from the getgo... We were making more and more money after the cuts were done, we just kept spending like no other.

Then the Dems take over and they start spending left and right as well, as we've seen since Obama took over....

and the cycle will continue again.

You can try and alter revenue all you want, but as I said, it's ingenuous to dare say that the tax cuts caused anything. Raising and lowering revenues is not something you can calculate in any way, shape, or form. It can only be guessed upon.

The one factor that you can control, is spending.

The tax cuts were a great idea and it spurred a good amount of increase of taxes but he wasted them by spending. And not just an increase of the Federal government but a huge non funded prescription plan. That plan pretty much guaranteed a deficit increase on a big scale. Then he was given a blank check by Congress (both parties) to go to a disastrous war that was unneeded and unwanted. I am not even going to blame Bush for the war as other presidents have wanted to but we had a Congress to keep that in check. I wish we could indict any and every member that voted for it. Then Bush started the stimulus packages that have almost ruined us to now. I never thought the Socialists would take that stimulus though and increase it again and again to record levels to where we are where we are now. They have made Bush even look good and that is hard to do but Obama the Socialist may have been the only putz on the planet that could make Bush look good.

The supreme court ruled the line item veto unconstitutional. The only way to get a line item veto is by a balanced budget amendment.
