Well Jennifer just found out from GM headquarters that her 1996 Chevy Silverado doesn't meet U.S. emissions and needs to have the computer reprogrammed. $200 plus labor on top of the $101 charge for a non-compliance letter. Doesn't seem fair to pay for a compliance letter that says you aren't compliant :bonk:

I did a google search and saw someone else say that the border patrol won't let you in if the compliance letter says your vehicle isn't compliant even if you have this retrofit done and have the paperwork. Could have just been a grouchy patrol person???

Anyone else here have to get this retrofit and did you have any problems at POE?

Thanks!

I didn't have a non-compliance problem but would the state even allow her to register the car and stuff when/if she gets it across the border? Even if it has the modification to it. That might be something to check out too.

Well after the retrofit it technically is compliant. The dealer fills out a form that stats the following:

"This form with attached copy of repair order provides record that the above listed vehicle’s engine control diagnostic system has been converted from Canadian OBD engine control diagnostic system to U.S. Federal OBD II engine control diagnostic system per GM Corporate Service Bulletin Number 02-06-04-039A. Keep this form and attachments with this vehicle for future vehicle registration, emissions inspection testing and/or transfer of ownership."

Which would imply that it should be sufficient for registration. I will check with my DMV to see if there will be any issues with them.

Thanks!

No, This is where you ask yourself is it really worth it or not. You have already spent thousands of dollars on getting your loved one here. This 200$ charge is really the straw that broke the camels back. If it was me, I would let the 1996 Truck be deported. I mean how much love can you really give. Makes me wonder now is Chevy truely American, or did we help bail out a foregin entity.

If I was you I would write to Daniel Ammann (CEO of Chevy), for his support or send him your bill. If that did does nto work, I would appeal to the US goverments on the how much of the truck was built and assembled here. If it is more than 65% , I would say its American.

Lastly, Shouldnt we as America just annex Canadato be part of the US. It should be very easy since there is not real army. I know we will have to do something with the French speakers, maybe resettle them in New Orleans.

But lastly and truely, I would just spend the 200$ for the letter and chauk it up another expense for my loved one being here.

Wishing you the Best and hoping to shed some humor and bad spelling and grammer, for all the Kids that cannot read good.

I don't appreciate this comment even if it is meant to be a joke and not serious. America does not have entitlement to do whatever they want just because they are America, that is the very reason America is in such trouble right now as it is.

I know it's pretty insane. Although if you are from Oshawa Ontario like my fiancee they would tell you that GM was born there. So blame Canada! hehe

I'm not about to tell Jenni that she can't bring her truck that she loves especially after selling her house and leaving her family and friends just to be with me. No I think I'll just fork out the money and figure out a way to get it imported. :innocent:

I'm offended by this statement as a Canadian! You should do some research about Canada before making ignorant comments. The US can't just take over a country because they want to.

Yeah I've heard lots of stories from retired Oshawa GM employees. Pretty crazy stuff went on there.

There are parts of Oshawa that are pretty nice. It's like a second home to me now since I've been up there so much in the last year.

I have no idea why someone would come to the Canada forum and make these kind of ignorant comments about our country. Hope that made you feel good about yourself, but in the future, try and keep it to yourself.

Good luck Paul - all you can do is do what is required on your end and discuss a back-up plan in case the truck is not allowed in. If worst came to worst and she had to sell it, I guess it would be fun to come down here and find a newer vehicle, right? Not being a driver myself, I do understand that folks are very attached to their cars :)

Yeah the back-up plan would be to get a new truck, but that would really suck since we just invested time and money into it so that it would last a few years while we pay down our debt from the wedding. We certainly don't need a new car payment right now.
