Marriage Certificate Translation

Hello everyone, I would appreciate much if anyone could answer this one for me.

I was married in Vietnam we received a Vietnamese Marriage Certificate. USCIS requires translated version of that certificate. Now my question is: Does it [the translation] need to be certified by USCIS, and does it need to be public notarized before I send it off to USCIS in the I-130 package?

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________

Date Typed Name

Address

Yes, it's important that a copy of the foreign language certificate accompany the translation. In most cases, anybody can do and certify the translation for USCIS but later, at the Consulate, requirements vary. Check the specific requirements for your Consulate.

Also, having them done in Vietnam is cheaper. All that we had done in Vn cost about $4 each, in the US we were charged $50. (We needed one last minute and didn't have time to send from Vietnam)

It's the translator that certifies they are fluent in both languages and that the translation is correct. A Notary has nothing to do with certifying a translation unless the Notary is doing the translating.

For USCIS, yes you can. However, if possible, I would recommend you do the work and then have one of your bilingual friends inspect and certify it. You'll want to check HCMC's specific requirements though for the Consulate stage. As an example the above recommendation won't work for Guangzhou, China. They want a government translation from a specific Chinese Government agency, no matter what USCIS accepted. You need an HCMC specific answer for that stage.
