I'm not sure this is the right place to post this question, so forgive me if I'm in the wrong place.

I live in New York and my boyfriend lives in Quebec. Our plan is to get married here in the U.S. as I have a regular and long time job and he is an artist in Quebec (you know how that goes). So getting married here makes more sense as I would have to 'sponsor' him. We are not concerned about living together right away so being separated for awhile is not a problem. The plan is that in 1-1/2 years I will be able to retire and collect my Social Security. I would like to cash out my lowly 401k to purchase a home and move to Quebec where we will both be able to live on our individual pensions. Question is: is this a reasonable and doeable goal? Should we marry soon? Should we just get married here and fill out whatever forms. Sorry to sound so ignorant -- but this is not exactly how I thought my later years were going to turn out so I never looked into it before. Any information and/or guideance would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you are planning to move to Canada in only about a year's time or so, why bother to try and bring him to the US? Why not get married, then live apart while you two file for you to move to Canada as his spouse? That seems to be where you plan on living anyway.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily be bringing him to the US -- I just wondered if it was best to get married while I have a good paying job in the US as to be his sponsor. Could he come here to see me and we just go get married at City Hall and then fill out what papers???? Thanks again.

If you plan on moving to Canada why not just get married for now. No need to sponsor him for a US immigrant visa if he doesn't plan on living here. He can still come to visit, he will just need to show ties to Canada. It is perfectly legal for him to come and marry you, just not for him to stay, without a immigrant visa.

Check with the laws in your state about what is needed to obtain a marriage license.
