There is a discussion happening about whether or not it is appropriate to use a language other than english (except for in the sub-region forums). Someone posted a reply in english and spanish. Several people replied that all posts must be in english. First, her post was in english and spanish but secondly I would like someone to post where this rule about "english only" is stated.

Also, for some people the term "english only" is offensive and can make people upset. I know I got upset when i saw people saying that. I think better is to say that we prefer if you use mostly english or translate anything not in english so everyone can take part in the conversation.

Ok...if someone could point me to where this rule is posted.

Thanks !

That has been the rule since I have been here. English is the common language in the US, as far as I know, and basic proficiency is a requirement for the eventual goal, I hope, of your Visa Journey, which is to become, or sponsor, a US Citizen. If you, or someone else is offended by the English only requirement, the main reason is to avoid confusion and baiting.

There is no written rule that compels members to use English outside of the Regional Discussion forums - we do ask that folks use English whenever possible though.

Captain Ewok (VJ's administrator) has said - [We do not want to berate or otherwise make members feel uncomfortable for not using English and especially if they may have trouble with it.] This whole "English Only Outside of Regional Forums!" can seem very impolite/harsh. It is a request (not a demand) and should be addressed that way.

The main reason(s) are: So that folks can get help from all members (not just those that speak their native language) and/or so other members can benefit from the discussion (whether they read a topic now or in the future). If members are much more comfortable using their native language (or have very limited English) they should try to use the Regional Discussion forums as much as possible (it would be the most logical place to do so).

That said - folks that might use non-English as a means to violate/circumvent our Terms of Service should be discouraged from doing so.

Otto, you banned AJ from the thread for using "achaladka"? Do you even know what that means? If you actually did, i seriously doubt you would have banned him. So is this the new TOS? You get banned because a moderator doesn't understand something? Priceles.
