Good Afternoon,

Please forgive me if I'm posting this question in the wrong forum. If the GC will expire in 30 days and the person wants to apply for citizenship, will they need to renew the the Green Card then apply for citizenship or can the person just deal with the citizenship application without renewing the greencard? I was trying to search the site for an answer, but couldn't find it...either way. Thanks to those who respond.

One Love,

Trelawny

Depends on how long you have been a lawful permanent resident and how you got your GC. If received a GC through marriage and you are still in conditional status (first 2 yrs of your marriage), you have to lift the condition and wait until 1 more year to apply for citizenship, because you have to have been a resident for at least 3 yrs to even begin applying for citizenship. Please give more info to get a better reply! Thank you.

another thing is (probably more to the point) that you should renew your green card if it expires in 6 months and you are applying for naturalization. Because if you are for some reason unsuccessful, and let your GC lapse there could be complications with your permanent residency.

Hope this helps!

Thanks. I gave him the information months ago but he forgot about it so I guess he'll end up paying both fees.

What matters for N-400 purposes is that the Green Card is still valid at the time the N-400 is received.

The applicant needs to include copies of the valid Green Card with the N-400 application. If the card expires shortly afterward, that's not a problem, although the I.O. may raise an eyebrow. It would be very unusual and rather cruel of an I.O. to expect an applicant sitting in the hot chair a the N-400 interview, just a jump away from becoming a US citizen, to file an I-90 for a new car she will never receive.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
