I sent my I-129F on January 25, 2011, and it was received on January 27th, and I received the hard copy of the letter stating if had been received a few days later. I have heard nothing from USCIS since then, is it common to now hear anything even though I am about 20 days out from the 5 month mark?

Yes, I have checked. It is still in initial review phase, but I just found it odd that I have heard nothing from them, and I am just wondering if this is how it typically goes for everyone.

It is normal not to hear anything - reason is, the petition is simply sitting in a pile waiting to be reviewed by and adjudicator for an overwhelming majority of its time at USCIS. They're not working it the entire time.

It's not uncommon for the file's bar-code to never be scanned (what we call a 'touch') after it has been initially entered into the system.

Neither is a bad thing - except the waiting of course. :)
