Because UAE (United Arab Emirates) is comprised of 7 individual "Emirate" : Abu Dhabi (Caplital), Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al-Kahima Umm Al-Quwain & Al-Ain.. These 7 Emirates banded together in the early 1970's to form a country, hence plural "Emirates".

I have no answer for this, but those who don't understand Arabic, won't understand why you're confused.

The question was: Emirate is a plural form, why is it written with "s" at the end?

Maybe lost in transcription.

I think the locals uses the word Emarat (like the Emarat Gas Station in UAE) and they call themselves Emarati? so I assume they don't really consider Emirate as an arabic word :unsure:

In English Emirate is a single word

In English Emirates is the plural

In Arabic Emara is a single word

In Arabic Emarat is a plural word

Therefore, When you say Emirate in English ( you mean one state ) and When you say Emirates ( you mean more than one state )

But in Arabic, you can never say Emirates
