I think it will depend a lot on your wife's family and what country/culture she comes from. My wife already sends money to her mom every month. I made it clear to my wife that we would continue to do that after she gets here. Her family is my family now B-)

But everyone and every situation is different. Talk to her about it, understand what is expected and be clear about what you can afford.

My fiance already sends money to his mom and sisters every month. We will continue to do that at the same level when he is here and we are married.

We are also talking about temporarily moving his mom and sister into an apartment and rebuilding their family home too; one floor for his mom, one floor for each sister and one floor for us so that we have a place to stay when we vacation there every year (and possible future retirement, you know, when we're like 100 and SS finally starts paying out ha ha ha).I told him our floor has to have a door to the bedroom and an American-style bathroom. We also need some way to make ice as American like their drinks cold!

If the wife wants to work, and send some of her money back home, then I see no problem. If the family takes advantage of her generosity, then I see a problem.

Just wondering how many people send money back to their spouse's family once their spouse has come over the US. The decisions about our life here and my spouse's family's life there is always a balancing act....

What country is your spouse from?
