I applied back just a couple of days after arriving in the U.S. on a K1. They took almost 3 months to process it and of course because of the time limit they denied it since my K1 was getting ready to expired. I did get married almost right away after arriving.

I then reapplied since I received my Employment Authorization Card. The person at Social Security said this time there should be no problem (he remembered us) and entered the data along with the new information and it game back need additional information. The helpful person filled out a G-845?? form and submitted it to DHS.

We then had our interview with USCIS for adjustment of status (I got my work permit early because a local school desperately needed a french substitute teacher). We explained the situation to the person doing the interview, he said there is no problem and we should have the card when we get home. We got home and still no card. We waited a couple of weeks and went to the office again today.

This office is small and very friendly. He remember us and he pulled up my information. He was shocked that it still said it need additional verification and said he did not know what to do anymore and he was at a loss of how to help us and apologized.

We left frustrated, and tried calling USCIS but they will not do anything over the phone other than telling us to do an INFOPASS? and make an appt. The office is 4 hours away and it seems like a waste of time to go there if they cannot help.

I did call our congressmen today and they said they should be able to help us and do something. I really hope so because right now I am having to work for free since they are not allowed to pay me without a SS#.

Is this typical and is there anything else I should be doing?

Side note: They are passing or passed an immigration law here in Utah. If you get pulled over and they can ask for proof that you are legally here. My K1 expired in Jan and even though I am now have my adjustment of status, I will not receive my id for a couple of weeks. I am afraid if I get pulled over for some reason, that I could be hauled in until they can verify my status. Since the government cannot even verify my status for a SS card, I wonder how long that verification could take?

I cannot even show my expired K1 and my letter that I had an appointment because USCIS takes all that from you at the interview. I have absolutely nothing to show that I am legally here until that card shows! Any suggestions besides hiding till the card arrives?

If that is exactly what the person did, that was wrong. They are supposed to do an initial verification while you are there, if that doesn't verify, they are to submit a secondary electronic verification request. That takes around three to five days to provide a response. If the response is that immigration wants to see a copy of your immigration document, that's when Form G-845 gets sent along with a photocopy of the front and back of your immigration document. There is now a third level verification based on immigration having processed the G-845, where SSA can electronically pull the verification from the G-845 into their system without waiting for the paper G-845 to come back to the SSA office. From what you have said the person skipped the second step of the verification process.

Is this typical and is there anything else I should be doing? You could go to this link http://www.ssa.gov/denver/index.htm and then click on Contact US and click on Online and click Feedback. Explain your situation from the very beginning and currently what is happening. I have to that when our local SSA office was given us wrong information regarding "obtaining ssn card for a married K1 visa holder within 90 days of I-94".

I cannot even show my expired K1 and my letter that I had an appointment because USCIS takes all that from you at the interview. I have absolutely nothing to show that I am legally here until that card shows! Any suggestions besides hiding till the card arrives?

Scan all your documents you receive from USCIS, I-94, passport, etc, and save it on your computer and print it for your records to show.

"Scan all your documents you receive from USCIS, I-94, passport, etc, and save it on your computer and print it for your records to show."

It may be too late to do that since they no longer have them in their possession. In the meantime, I would carry a copy of your AOS NOA1, a copy of your marriage certificate and your passport w/ the original visa in it (they didn't take that, did they?) with you to show that you have a pending Adjustment of Status.

I just talked to SS office here and they said it is done automatically. They do not even have an option, and it just sends a secondary verification request and when it comes back they have to send the G8 form. They did everything they said and it is just waiting DHS to respond. This person says the two week thing is false and it can take 4-6 weeks. Is that the normal experience here? They said coming on a K1 is almost the worst thing. Funny since it is supposedly the right way and cost a heck of a lot. But they said it is because status can change so quickly with it.

Thanks, now that you mention that, I do have all my documents scanned and photocopied. They took the I-94?? form that was stapled out of the passport. I was wrong to say the visa, sorry.

From the way you described it, it sounded like they when right from the initial verification to the G-845 while you were in the office. It is two weeks to receive your card if they can clear the application at the time you apply. I have seen it take a lot longer than even six weeks to get the immigration verification and get the application cleared.

The good thing is that if the office does things right, they don't need to wait for the G-845 to be mailed back to the office. The third level verification immigration does when they process the G-845 can be pulled into the SSN system.
