Immigration & Customs at JFK - any restrictions ( dos & donts) & Application for SSN

I am just about to come in via JFK in about 10 days with the K1

please can I get advice on these:

how do I get the SSN & Temp EAD?

where at the Airport do I request for them? do I just ask the customs?

do I have enough time to clear customs and still go for the SSN & Temp EAD?

is there a closing time for the office that issues the SSN & work stamps?

are there items prohibited or not to be brought into the US?

eg electronics, food etc.

as I intend bringing my hard drives and drivers/visuals and maybe DVD player unless advised otherwise.

please advise

thanks

No food (especially perishables like meats, dairy and vegetables). Candy should be ok though.

Electronics are fine, but pack them in your hand baggage. If you pack them in checked luggage, they'll likely be confiscated by Homeland Security. (Has happened to me twice - why didn't I learn after the first time???)

Never heard of getting an SSN at the airport - or a temporary EAD on a K1 visa. But I'll let the experts dive in on those topics.

No such thing as temp EAD, the practice stopped a while back, it is not considered valid. Employer's use form I-9, and it specifies a photo EAD for work authorization.

Besides K-1 can get a SSN without the stamp, K-1 is allowed SSN for marriage purposes.

You can apply for SSN sometime 10 days after arrival, the SSA office wont issue one before then due to not being able to confirm status until them.

Prohibited items tend to be many foods. Check here: http://www.cbp.gov/x...ravel/clearing/

SSN is applied for at your nearest Social Security office where ever you live. There is no temp EAD at airports anymore.

I would check the TSA main site for prohibited items etc that aren't to be brought to the US.

Pack all electronics/valuables in your carry-on, do not check them as they can either be taken by customs or stolen (one in the same in my book)

If you tell them the medicines are for personal use, they'll allow them (I actually took a large quantity of Lopid--for someone else--through JFK in 2005 without even bothering to tell them that, and mailed it from Baltimore to the intended recipient).
