FORT WORTH, Texas - RadioShack Corp. followed through on its announced plans to cut about 400 jobs, but the electronics retailer has been forced on the defensive about its method of notifying laid-off employees by e-mail.

Employees at the Fort Worth headquarters received an e-mail Tuesday morning telling them they were being dismissed immediately.

"The work force reduction notification is currently in progress," the notice stated. "Unfortunately your position is one that has been eliminated."

Company officials had told employees in a series of meetings that layoff notices would be delivered electronically, spokeswoman Kay Jackson said. She said employees were invited to ask questions before Tuesday's notification on a company intranet site.

Management experts expressed surprise at RadioShack's use of electronic notification instead of face-to-face meetings with supervisors.

Derrick D'Souza, a management professor at the University of North Texas, said he had never heard of such a large number of terminated employees being notified electronically. He said it could be seen as dehumanizing to employees.

Wow - I got dumped by email once (by an Australian chick who ironically enough worked in another part of my office in London).

I guess they figure 'firing' by email will cause less chance of 'an incident'. After all, most people don't like confrontation. Still - a scumbag thing to do.

I think its pretty tacky but then again when I worked for Mr. Coffee we found out that we were sold by reading it in The Wall Street Journal. :o

She said employees were invited to ask questions before Tuesday's notification on a company intranet site.

Who was stupid enough to ask questions? I think that would be the kiss of death.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

My sister in law used to work for this place near her home. The company director and his wife owned two businesses and would invest money even if it mean't they couldn't pay their employees. Not only were they living with one of their employees in HIS house, but every time the checks came around there was a mad scramble to get to the bank first before the checks started bouncing...

Apparently the proprietors own not only this weird mail/insurance place (where my SIL used to work), but of all things… a Canadian café. In Southern California. I never went there, not only on principle, but because anyone who cuts corners with regards to their budget and ensuring their employees get paid probably will do the same with a catering business, not to mention what a disgruntled employee might do to the food.
