Haagen,

CBP.gov still states:

"While DHS continues to work together with the airlines to fully automate the I-94W process, all VWP travelers applying for admission at a U.S. port of entry, including VWP travelers who have obtained travel authorization via ESTA, must present a completed Form I-94W to U.S. Customs and Border Protection".

So this implies that (now the I-94W has been withdrawn) the fully automated system is up and running.

An assumption on my part, sure... but "fully automated" implies that a passport will have to be swiped/ have its details recorded, at Check-In when the visitor leaves the U.S.

As for your question: "Does the USA immigration department depend ENTIRELY on the check in counter staff entering into the system that I actually physically flew out on my aircraft???????????".

Yep, but they always have relied on check-in staff for departure records... Don't forget that US immigration previously relied on check in staff to collect your I94-W stub (even if the responsibility was technically on the traveller to make sure it happened).

So the update is

Woot =) Went through into the USA and left with no problems.

They didnt scan my passport when I entered. All the lady did was type in my passport number and said I was good to go.

She threw away the white I94 (that i filled up) and said I did not need it.....

So one interesting question.

I realized that when I left SFO, there was no immigration check point.

Since I did not have a I94 white card to be removed at the airplane check in counter, my question is : how does immigration know that I left USA?

Does the USA immigration department depend ENTIRELY on the check in counter staff entering into the system that I actually physically flew out on my aircraft???????????

When you leave airline provides your passport number back to immigration.

If you remember before getting your boarding pass you have to fill out your passport information and other details.
