yes, they allow you to track your passport application status online.

For me, it was updated 5 days after my application was turned in, showing something like this:

-------------------------------------

"Thank you for submitting your application for a U.S. passport book! It is currently being processed.

Your passport application locator number is (9-digit number).

When you applied, you requested Routine Service. See our website for more information on current

Processing Times.

We are processing Routine Applications in approximately 4 to 6 weeks from the time of application."

--------------------------------------

Then about 1 or 2 days after that I saw my status was updated to the following:

-----------------------------------------

Thank you for submitting your application for a U.S. passport book!

Your passport application locator number is (9-digit number).

We have finished processing your passport, and it has been mailed to you using Priority Mail.

You should receive your passport on or about 01/19/2011.

Your Priority Mail delivery confirmation number is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx . *** Please note that the delivery confirmation number is not a tracking number. It is a number that will provide information as to whether or not an envelope has been delivered. You can click on the delivery confirmation number to check delivery status or call USPS at 1-800-222-1811.

If you have any additional questions, please contact the

National Passport Information Center with the above locator number. It will enable them to update you on the status of your application.

Note: If you do not receive your newly issued passport in the mail within ten days, please contact the

National Passport Information Center to report the non-receipt of your passport. If you do not report the non-receipt of your passport within 90 days from the date the passport was issued, you will be required to reapply and pay the full passport fee.

---------------------------

This statement "*** Please note that the delivery confirmation number is not a tracking number" is a LIE, b/c the passport will be mailed to you as a priority mail (assuming you paid for the routine service) and there IS a tracking/confirmation number being assigned it, allowing you to track the mailing status of your passport on USPS's website. Please jog down this number as soon as you see it, b/c this updated message will only be there for ONE day, after that it will disappear and changed to something like this:

--------------------------------------

Thank you for submitting your application for a U.S. passport book!

Your passport application is in the final processing stages.

Your passport application locator number is (9-digit number).

When you applied, you requested Routine Service.

This means you should receive your passport on or about 01/19/2011.

If you have any additional questions, please contact the

National Passport Information Center with the above locator number. It will enable them to update you on the status of your application.

-------------------------------------------------

Why to jog down that tracking number you asked me? b/c my passport was received 4 days prior to the estimated date above. b/c I jogged down the tracking number, I knew exactly when my passport was delivered to my mail box.

Currently it takes about 13 to 14 days for an expedited passport to arrive. If you use the status checker that was mentioned before, the final message will tell you "when or about" you will receive your passport. It will arrive via Express Mail, hand delivered, pretty much on the button at the date they specify. Therefore, just watch the online status update until the date shows up and have somebody at home to sign for it.

The certificate will be mailed via Priority Mail and no signature is necessary. Depending on which passport processing center printed your passport (meaning how far it is away from you -- something you can decipher on the code of your processing number ), you will receive the certificate the same day as you receive your passport or the next day or even two days later.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

The post office ppl told me expedited service would only "expedite" your application by one day, meaning you will receive your passport one day earlier than routine service. Again it took me 9 days to get my passport in the mail via routine service. My passport was mailed to me as priority mail and my certificate and name changed court order were 1st class mail in a priority mail envelop lol

I think what they were referring to was the express MAIL service (overnight), which is one day faster than the priority mail service of USPS, and costs about $13 more. The expedited service at the government passport office, which costs $60, reduces the time by 1 to 4 weeks, based on the times posted on State's website.
