The fundamental ignorance of so many in this thread regarding art is staggering. I suppose to them, a lithograph of a group of dogs playing poker is art. Yes Danno, I'm sure most could be quite successful if they just gave up and went into graphic art or directly for advertisers. You clearly place no value to you, or to society on artistic endeavors. Sad really.

Exactly. They want to subsidize things that don't need it. If it is good enough to sell and make money then great. If no one wants it and artists go hungry then maybe they should find a new line of work. Our tax dollars do not need to be funding any arts. Cut off public broadcasting now. Is is used as a Socialist medium to get a narrow viewpoint out and if that viewpoint is so needed then they wouldn't need our tax dollars to stay around.

You appear to have a faith in free market capitalism that borders on outright misunderstanding.

There are certain aspects of culture and society worth preserving which fundamentally cannot live or die by the whim of consumer preference.

Likewise there are rudimentary democratic necessities such as impartial news programming which can only be supplied by public broadcasting.

Should the taxpayer pay for controversial art? Art, for art's sake?

When the country is running a $1.5 trillion budget deficit for FY2011, art, humanities, public broadcasting, NASA, and all the other unnecessary expenditures need to be reduced or eliminated.

B.S. If an idea cannot stand on it's own, it should be discarded.

I disagree with your stance on public broadcasting and especially NASA. Neither is unnecessary.

As for the arts and humanities, we can probably replace much of the little amount Government spends with private sources if we actually tried to.

Or we could order 2 less tanks and be ok both artistically and militarily.

Public Radio/TV stations are often the only place debates for local political races gets broadcasted.

There has been a push to privatize NASA. Public broadcasting can survive without Federal assistance. Check your programming guide, and note how many PBS stations you have access to. The days of the big 3 commercial broadcasting companies dominating viewer content ended decades ago.

Yes. We can do with a smaller military.

Get rid of the Marines. How hard can it be to find sharp dressing doormen?

Why do we need a Navy? Can't the Air Force just land planes at airports?

And why do we need an Air Force? Really. Let the Army fly commercial.

I see the mere thought of a reduced military has you in convulsions. Hi-larious.

When we have weapon systems that burn fuel in gallons/mile, it seems we need to rethink things a bit, don't you?

So now Bill has revealed himself to be a neocon.

I am cereal!
