When the country is running a $1.5 trillion budget deficit for FY2011, art, humanities, public broadcasting, NASA, and all the other unnecessary expenditures need to be reduced or eliminated.

Why? To save 0.03 percent (the equivalent of pocket lint on a sinking boat, to use AJ's simile)?

If you collect all them drops in a bucket, you get cups, then pints, then quarts, then gallons. Whether you die all at once, or from a thousand paper cuts, the result is the same.

You can't nickel and dime the federal deficit down. If you're aren't willing to cut military spending, then you are just being disingenuous.

You won't. It's like saying that you will become a millionaire by saving

your change in a piggy bank and recycling your bottles and cans. You might

save up $200 in a year or two, but it won't ever come close to a million dollars.

If the powers that be can demonstrate their ability to cut spending in political sacred cows like social security and the military, then I think you'll find a lot less skepticism about cutting the arts.

You won't find the will to cut entitlements and defense until you eliminate all those little luxuries. Those old codgers vote, and they won't give up what they think they already paid for. Defense will be easier to cut than Social Security, or Medicare, if Obama follows through on what he said Tuesday, that he will veto any bill with earmarks.

Where did you get the idea I don't want to cut military spending?

Big things tend to take care of themselves. It's the small things that go unnoticed.

Really. Too many selfish old people in this world.

I bet they could get this rule fixed so earnings decrease benefits regardless of age. At time of high unemployment, who is going to whine to protect the entitlements of those with jobs?

If you were born January 2, 1943, through January 1, 1955, then your full retirement age for retirement insurance benefits is 66. If you work and are full retirement age or older, you may keep all of your benefits, no matter how much you earn. If you are younger than full retirement age, there is a limit to how much you can earn and still receive full Social Security benefits. If you are younger than full retirement age during all of 2011, we must deduct $1 from your benefits for each $2 you earned above $14,160.

If this rule is changed and their 401ks remain unusable, they will have no choice but to remain in the workforce and receive little to no social security...

They will. They will either give it up willingly, or they will give it up when

the country defaults and goes bankrupt for real.
