GREEN CARD BEFORE SSN

Happens a lot!! They wont give ur SSN # over the phone!! SOOOOOo like many others, download the form at http://ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

fill it out, then go to ur local SSN office and check on the status. most likely a SSN has NOT been issued, since you planned ahead--hand over the already filled out form!! They will ask for ID--hand them ur green card and birth certificate, bring along ur passport!!

Of course you do not have to download the form-they have them at the office--this just speeds things up once you get there!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

ya, sorry, this 'carry-through' is hit and miss - sometimes it works, sometimes not -

Let's assume NOT, for the moment, and you'll have to get in to the local SSA office and apply for a new SSN.

This is a cool thing to do, really, as you'll have a chance to inquire with some SSA clerk:

--SSN already applied, or not? (If not, sorry, that DS-230 tick box thingie fell through the cracks/chasm. If Yes, they'll find it, do some elfin magick with the pooter system)

--YER VISA NAME exists in SAVE database or not? If not, come back 3 weeks AFTER POE date, apply again.

--Problems in SAVE database with Name or Number (then ya gits down to the closest CBP secondary inspection / deferred inspection site, face to face, in person, get yer SAVE record fixed in real-time)

Good Luck ! (and stuff ! )

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
