That's the conventional argument, but research into the future of agriculture shows that large-scale crops are ultimately detrimental to our existence, particularly as volatile weather patterns from the changing climate can devastate these crops. If we are going to survive over the next century, we're going to have to move more towards, local, sustainable agriculture.

So only people who reside in parts of the planet with fertile soil get to live?

What you're suggesting is genocide.

And, what if the they don't have a year around climate to sustain agriculture, like say, Salinas, California? Most of the produce you are getting this time of year comes from South America.

I read a study that organic milk is healthier than non-organic milk. Whatever - the baby gets organics because I've been made to feel too guilty to do otherwise by the organazis.

you must break free from those chains!

The problem with organic food, and many other products is that there is no verification process. I could just slap on the labels "Organic Free Range Carrots, with extra calcium for Women" and the only requirement is that the product is actually a carrot.

Yeah I pretty much subconsciously started getting organic milk, eggs and yogurt for my wife lately. I realized what I was doing one day when she asked me why I'm buying all this expensive #######.

Seeing products made from "organic cotton" cracked me up.

I suppose the people who buy organic cotton also enjoy the fine corinthian leather in their cars.

Verification issues aside, the concept of organic cotton isn't totally ridculous. It's grown without synthetics. Whether or not you think there's any benefit to that is a valid question, but it's not like the term organic cotton is redundant or arbitrary.

I think a modest proposal could help here.

I quite agree. It's well known that I've been eating babies for years, and aside from occasional dyspepsia I highly recommend the practice. Babies -- they're Malthu-licious!star_smile.gif

Here is a description of it from the Organic Cotton Trade Group

What is "organic cotton?"

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming. All cotton sold as organic in the United States must meet strict federal regulations covering how the cotton is grown.

Sounds like a good idea..... but there is no regulation or verification process. So this could be a scam, like all those products that they make "for women" or "organic".

We don't have to eliminate large crops entirely, but places like Haiti, which happens to be one of the poorest countries, actually has fertile soil, but they don't grow most of their own food. Instead they import most of their food.
