Whose to say he practiced any religion? Why is an attack against the military perceived in a religious context?

Maybe we are influenced by the many documentaries showing the recruitment of suicide bombers by radical religious groups. Face it--the religous aspect is the tool used to convince so many young people to end their lives in this fashion with promises of rewards in heaven. What is the professed religion of those people running terrorist training camps and recruiting suicide bomber? .... Here's a hint .... it's not Baptist.

Yes, religion is used as a tool of recruitment. However, this was an attack against a military target. There is no reason to frame this as an act of religious extremism. Targets against military targets, especially that of an occupying force, are normally framed as resistance.

So the kamikaze pilots were religious?

The devotion to the Emperor was religious in nature in the sense that he was considered to be divine and the devotion to him was cult-like in its blindness.

The tamil suicide bombers are doing so in a religious context?

The LTTE are mostly Hindu. While they do not use Hinduism in their rhetoric, they do make a point of excluding the islands Muslims from their battle against the Buddhist Sinhalese. If their movement was completely un-religious, they would ally with the Muslims in their fight. But they do not. Religion plays a role in that conflict as well, whether the media says that openly or not.

Transcend life and death. When you eliminate all thoughts about life and death, you will be able to totally disregard your earthly life. This will also enable you to concentrate your attention on eradicating the enemy with unwavering determination, meanwhile reinforcing your excellence in flight skills.

- A paragraph from the Kamikaze pilot's manual, located in their cockpits.

Yes, but neither group is being labeled by their religion. When Charles posted the clip, it quickly became "Muslim terrorist". Religion may play a role but it is not the motivation for an attack against military.

This isn't advocating killing. I have family in the military Charles, including a member who served during this war. He would tell you military is a legitimate target. Are you saying this is not the case? Military is not a target during war?

It sounds disturbingly like your focus is more on protecting the good name of Islam than dealing with reality. Whether or not this guy was Muslim (although I would put money on him being so) isn't it a tragedy that people are suicide attacking US troops? And at the same time that people are dying in the name of hate? Please, come down off that pedestal and get real.

How do you suggest I deal with reality? I think this war is tragic. I think it is horrible that our troops are being killed. I also think it is terrible that Iraqis are being killed, and that Iraqis are now killing each other. I have donated money for body armor, my Brownie troops have sent multiple care packages and I repeatedly write to my representatives to give the troops the support the need.

However, that doesn't mean ignoring people who say that attacks against military are religious attacks, unless you are saying this is a war about religion.

I just wanted to highlight that, since I know most people will conveniently "forget" that part of your post.
