Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this kind of question!

I know I still have a few more months to go, but I've been feeling a little worried about me and my Fiance getting a place to live. It will be my first place without my parents, so I'm not sure how it works. I've looked at a few apartment applications just to see what they ask, and they all ask for Social Security number and current job. Obviously he wont have any of those when he first moves here. I'm not sure what I will do, explain to the owner why he doesn't currently have a Social Security number? or not even put him down at all? Our plan is for him to come here after we have an apartment, so I can't really wait until he has his number.

Thanks for reading.

My friend was just added to the apt lease when they got married and she had her ssn. He already had the apt before she moved down on a K-1.

As you are the petitioner you would have to apply for apartment then when he comes here and you get married you can have the lease put in joint names as he can get his ssn a few weeks after your marriage. You can have the lease without ssn as I was never asked for my ssn number to be put on the lease but it was my now husbands anyways.

Unless you are unemployed and can't afford a place of your own.

Ok,thanks. I thought I had to add him to it since he will be living there also. I wasn't sure if you could add someone to the lease later on.

We looked prior to me moving down. Wife was on the lease and when I came down I was simply added on to it. She explained I was moving here from Canada, was simple as that. Now if you have a crappy credit history and/or no references, it could be harder. Most places will do a credit check, may or may not call your references, as come on, why would any one use a reference that is going to give you a bad reference, lol Be prepared to put down a months rent as a down payment, some only request a half a month, it varies from owner and as well from state laws. Check out your State laws regarding renting (google it)

http://www.apartmentratings.com/ is a decent site for apartment reviews, there are others as well, google is your friend. As well knock on doors and speak to other tenants to see if they like the apartment or not! You would be surprised how honest some people can be!! Do some research as repacking and moving is not fun!! Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I had rented my apartment before my husband moved in. I added him to the lease after he had his SSN and his green card, all I had to do was pay for his application fee and background check and that was that. You don't have to sign a new lease with your fiancé from the get go.
