You always have to remember that you would be choosing to permanently change a part of who you are, a part of your body you were born with...i have gone back and forth about pinning my ears (they aren't that bad apparently, but i notice they stick out a bit)...but then I look at my old great great Jewish grandfather [YANKEL Cohen lol] and remember I totally have his ears...so my ears I suppose connect me to me ancestory and my genes...for better or for worse...

Back to the ears...my husbands ears kinda stick out too and I never even think about it except for the fact that I love him so much and who cares? We both joke about having little jewish creole babies with stick-out ears....

Lastly, do you want to ever have kids? if yes, when I think about having kids, I never want to be too much of a hypocrite....if yor kid has a nose they don't like and they see mommy got a nose job, how will you deal with the teenage years of "self-esteem" and "it's what's inside that counts"? just some Q's to think about...

There's nothing wrong with wanting to change who you are or what you were born with.

No-one is perfect, and people naturally strive for perfection.

I don't think it's shallow to have comestic surgery. And it doesn't matter whether everybody else thinks you look pretty (and I do think you do - look at those big eyes!). I guess the question you have to ask yourself is whether *you* are comfortable with the way you look. If it makes you unhappy, or if you simply think you want to look better, then go for it.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

Yeah I suppose that's true mawilson. I have been toying with the idea for a long time, and I figure I might as well do it while my mom is offering to pay for it, if I do it at all.

If I ever have kids, I'd probably tell them that they should try to love their bodies for being as healthy as they are (let's hope) but if there is ever anything that really bothered them, it would be ok to change it when they're out of college, so they can be who they want to be.

My nose is pierced and has a tiny stud, and that was my old way of making peace with the nose, but I don't know how long that is going to last. I also worry because my boyfriend makes a lot of good-natured jokes about my nose and it's starting to make me more self conscious.

I don't think I would get rid of its Jewishness though; that part of my nose DOES make up part of who I am for me. Plus it lets other members of the tribe identify me.

If the procedure isn't dangerous, I say go for it! There are too many things we can't change

about ourselves (ethnicity, background, past, family upbringing, height, skin color, eye color,

age, etc) to worry about the things we can.

How soon are you going to do it?

I am now planning to do it inbetween my trip to Brazil to visit the boyfriend and the trip to visit my grandma in Greece. So somewhere between October 26 and Nov 11. Seems like a good time for recovery, although I have to economize on my recovery times because I also need my wisdom teeth out! It depends if I can get in with this Dr. Michael something-or-other in that time period. So if I'm going to do it, I've got to make an appointment tomorrow for a consult. Eek!

I wish they could just take my wisdom teeth out at the same time... hey, when my dad got this nose surgery done they threw in a vasectomy. (TMI? )

So when are you coming to New York?

Oh man, I wish I knew. When I got back from Brazil (in April) I waited for 2 months for my boyfriend Rey's other visa to be approved, but surprisingly it was rejected (a student/internship visa). So I have been living at home in Minneapolis working since then, and my job is officially done September 23, at which point I'm going back to Brazil. Then in November I'm traveling MORE. So um, if all that travel hasn't destroyed my pocketbook and I don't have to stay here and work a little more... December 1? If I can't find a good job there, I'm moving to Boston, though.

I'm still kind of undecided on the city. I can't find anything even in Brooklyn that's affordable! And also Rey needs to finish college and Harvard has a really cheap extension school.

Where is the "sigh" smiley?

"Even in Brooklyn" makes it sound like a bad place (which it's not.)

Have you tried Craigslist? What's your budget? I'll keep an eye open for you.

Aw thanks mawilson! My budget is a little TBD. I *want* to live in Brooklyn, as that seems to be where most of my friends have gone, but I will need to not live with roommates. Any kind of apartment will do, really, although ideally a lofted studio for less than 1000 would be great. Park Slope, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Red Hook are a few places I've got people. I don't have a job or any leads yet though, so I'd assume securing employment would be a good idea before moving. I just don't know how it's done there! I really, really don't want to pay a broker's fee and I keep looking on Craigslist but am a little clueless as to exactly where is good and where is not good.

Ive had a nose job  well 2 atually. Back when I was 18. My big sister had a nose very similar to yours, and she had nose job when she was younger. Hers went really well. Well my nose didnt ahve a hook, but due to an accident when I was younger, the bone from front view was very bent- and it was also too big for my liking. So as my sister had had one, I decided to as well.

When the cast came off, I cried for a long time. It was like looking in the mirror, but not seeing yourself. It remained swollen for many months- when the swelling had all gone, and my nose was 'how it was going to be'- there was a big problem. The tip of the bone was poking the skin a lot, as though it were almost going to pierce it. So I returned to the surgeon, and he agreed the surgery was a problem- and he would re-due it waiving his fees. So we agreed to that, however on a later consultation he 'forgot' agreeing to waive the fees(!) so we ended up paying half of them. The second surgery in my opinion was still not a success. My nose is still not how I imagined, and it is still bent! I worry that the bone is going to start poking through again. So we will see.

The type of surgery you would be after is however a much more simple procedure. Due to the bend in my nose, this caused a more invasive procedure to be necessary, with more potential complications.

In hindsight, I was too young to really decide something like that. If I would have done it now- no. Back when I was younger, I was more concerned with vanity and material things. Now I see the importance of other things, and am much more content with who I am. Like I said though, I worry I will now have to go through the surgery again, to fix the problems caused by the surgeries.

In saying that, the surgery and the recovery are really not that bad. I never really felt any pain.

I wish you the best in whatever you decide  If you wanna know more about anything, just let me know!

Thanks for sharing that, Laura. That's terrible that the surgeon didn't waive the fee the second time! How long did you have to have the little nose cast on? This makes me a little less interested in doing anything extra like getting the bump shaved off or something.

I know it's possible to find a semi-decent 2-bedroom in Brooklyn for around $1,200-1,400,

so in theory a $1,000 should get you a studio or even one-bedroom.

The best way, I think, is to move here and stay with your friends for a week or so

while looking for an apartment.

...I will need to not live with roommates.

*Split infinitive alert*
