So I think we are just about through with our journey. Yesterday we got our AOS interview appointment in the mail and it's for the second week of Feb. I am confident that everything will be fine and my husband will be approved for the green card. The process has been really smooth with no bumps. The problem is still his Kenyan passport which is expired and it can take 8 to 11 weeks to get a new one. If we send it in right now he would get it back in enough time to travel, but is the original passport needed for the AOS interview? Also the paper said initial interview, does that mean another interview will be required? Is there any kind of emergency travel papers my husband can apply for that will let him leave the country? He would not leave until he had his green card in his hand. His father is very sick and his brother has been admitted into the hospital several times in the last month. We don't wanna wait until it is too late.

Passport may be needed as ID to interview, it can be expired.

Initial interview meas just that, more than likely will be approved at the initial interview, however they can always, interview, then do further processing and then request a second interview, though I have yet to see anyone post about a second interview for AOS.

What visa are you adjusting from??

Why didn't you apply for the free-with 485 AP document? You most usually would have had that by now. You CAN send that in now and request an infoPass appt to speedthat up.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

His Texas Driver's License or social security card wouldn't suffice for id? Sorry we are adjusting from an expired student visa.

Question, does SSN card have a photo on it?? SSN is NOT and ID.

TX DL will be good ID.

YEP, A F-1 visa holder needs AP inorder to travel while AOS is pending,

Moving this to the correct forum, AOS from STUDENT/Work/Tourist visa.

They will need the passport anyway, as the application requires a photocopy of the passport, and the interview letter requires all originals be brought to the interview. OP: Why didn't you apply for Advance Parole which is temporary travel permission while AOS is pending? I am confused on this one. Good luck.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

I didn't apply for that because we didn't think he would need it. He will not be traveling until the green card is in his hand, the problem with that is waiting and additional 2+ months for the new passport from the Kenyan Embassy. The AOS will not be pending it will be approved at that time.

If you interview and you don't have it, the worse they can do is approve pending you bring them the passport at a future time.
