My wife came in on a K-1 and we got her social security card with her maiden name and then once we were married, went to the local office again and showed the marriage license and filed a name change.

We then went to the State of Michigan secretary of state to get her a state ID card and they looked up her visa in some online system and it only showed her maiden name that she came in on. With the marriage license, the best they would do was hyphenate her last name with mine. They would not give her a state ID card with her new middle and last name.

We have since received the new social security card with her first middle and last name how we want it to read (no hyphen as her maiden family name becomes her new middle name.)

Did we just go to the secretary of state too quick? Would this system that they looked her up in eventually get updated since we did the name change at the social security office?

Thanks for your help.

You file I-485 using married name, and note maiden name on I-485 "Name on I-94" line, also on G-325A maiden name goes on "Other names used" line.

SSA does not update USCIS records, adjusting status with married name does.

State will probably accept a green-card or EAD card with married name.

moved from AOS forum as more related to identification issues related to ID and SSN during the immigration process which are better addressed in this forum

States verify the driver's license application info against the SSN record, so I would assume that now that the SSN record has been updated the driver's license can be issued with the same name.
