Hello,

My husband and I would like to invite his mother, who lives in Peru, to come and visit us. The information I have found is that she needs to apply for the tourist B visa at the US Embassy in Peru (so this is out of my hands).

However, MIL and my husband are telling me that there is a different visa that we (husband and I) would start here in the US by submitting an invitation letter for MIL to come here. I do not find this information and I hope someone can clear this up for me. What visa is this for?

Thanks!

Your MIL needs to apply for a B-2 tourist visa in Peru. That is correct. Many people believe that it is smart to write some sort of invitation letter for a tourist visa, like the example in the post above. I am not sure if that is smart or needed; most people get tourist visas by themselves. To answer that question, you might check out the regional subforums and see what is the norm at the Peruvian consulate. Either way, the visa she will be applying for is a B-2 tourist visa, and if you provided a letter, it would be used as evidence for her tourist visa application (which she would still have to do by herself). Good luck.
