I would like to know what, specifically, in the state trooper contract/code of conduct he violated by joining the KKK.

If he hasn't done anything like that, he shouldn't be fired.

ALTHOUGH, while I'm sure there's no record of his abuse of minorities, I'd be willing to bet he has done so in--at least--subtle ways.

His civil rights are being violated. I hate what the klan stands for, but it is not illegal to belong. And the beauty of America is that he has a right to participate, no matter how much we hate it.

This guy is just being used as a lesson here. The KKK is deplorable and I'M NOT DEFENDING THEM, but this guy's work record is fine, and it's his right to do what he wants when he's not on the clock so much as it doesn't break the law.

"conflict of interest" what? The state troopers are not an organization per se, they are gov't law enforcement. The KKK is a private organization. If he has done nothing wrong on the job and has a record of treating everyone fairly (no matter how dubious the reports), they can't really legally fire him. It WOULD violate his civil rights.

I still vote that he get the treatment Reinhard suggested. Good old fashioned legal ###-whuppin from the streets.

While that may be true generally speaking for Klans ppl being somehow 'off' mentally (you and I might believe that to be true because they're racist azzholes) , you cannot legally say that all Klansppl suffer from a mental disorder, and being part of that group proves it because you can't legally prove that to be true. It proves that people are racist, and nothing more.

If the cop has a mental problem, then YES take him off the force. If he is known to work his bias on the job, YES take him off the job.

Being part of the Klan doesn't make him an azzhole...him being a racist does. See where I'm differentiating here? But unless the police have a specific clause in an employment agreement which says you cannot be a racist, then he shouldn't lose his job. And if they DO have that kind of clause, cops should be psychologically tested yearly or semi-annually to see if they are developing a bias, and the appropriate actions should be taken in direct response to the results of the test.

It's a very fine line, and while part of me is happy they fired him, part of living in America is accepting that ppl have rights - and even while I may not like them..hate them even...- I have to accept their right to do so. Just like I have to accept the right of ppl protesting anti-American propaganda, or those Westboro Baptists....as long as they don't break the law, they have a right to do as they choose.

That is the case with journalism and it bothers me quite a bit. You are not allowed to participate in anything political or campaign for anyone. Or even have a bumper sticker. I'm conflicted about the career.

Anyway, I'm still not sure they can legally fire him just on those grounds, unless there are specific state trooper rules. The military does not allow white supremacists in (theoretically) so perhaps they have some kind of rule like that.

If it were just any job, I'm assuming they wouldn't be able to fire him though.
