HOPE WE GET ANSWERS FROM OUR ROMANIAN FRIENDS. WE GOT MARRIED IN US AND HUSBAND PETITION WAS APPROVED. NVC IS ASKING OUR LAWYER A COPY OF PASSPORT BEARING THE NEW NAME MARRIED. OUR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IN TEXAS DOES NOT MENTION ANY NAME CHANGE. WE ANTICIPATE A LOT OF PROBLEMS IN ROMANIA TRYING TO OBTAIN A NEW PASSPORT. ANY EXPERIENCE OF VISA JOURNEY MEMBERS ?

We had similar issues and problems in Russia trying to change my wife's passport. Our marriage certificate also does not indicate her new name. Fortunately my wife had arrived on a K-1 and we were married and had already adjusted status. We never were able to change her passport in Russia (and did not really need to), but did have the Russian embassy in the US add a notation about her new name.

For changing her passport I'm pretty sure you are going to need some good documentation showing her new last name, translated and probably apostilled.

Yes, I anticipate I will have the same problems in Romania. The first thing we need to do is register the marriage in Romania and we have 2 options:

1) we do it in Romania at the Civil Registrar (but I heard that they ask for the marriage certificate in ORIGINAL, whereas we would not have it, since in the US the marriage certificate is a certified copy)

2) depending on where you are living, contact the Romanian Consulate (NY, Chicago, Washington DC...and I think there is one in Los Angeles too). Also, find the Consulate's website (I myself checked the website of the Consulate in Chicago) and you will find ways of how to register your marriage in Romania. They will practically do everything (including obtaining the new passport for you), but you need to provide the papers. Make sure you do have your new (married) name on some documents (SSN card maybe? GC?)

I'm still to decide which of the options to choose... Probably the latter, but I need to make sure I gather all the papers I need, cuz I have to apply in person (yep, can't do it by mail :bonk: ) and it's not like Chicago is 5 mins away from home...

There is a honorary consulate in Dallas check the link ; contact the Consulate personnel for more info. The consulates in Chicago and Los Angeles don't have jurisdiction in Texas (so that leaves only NY and Washington)... Here's the link for the Consulate in NY LINK and the Embassy in Washington LINK . Good luck!

From my experience with Romanian consulate in L.A - I was need to have the apostill on my american marriage certificate so that my marriage will be registered in Romania and after, so.. 10 days..not sure but was quick.. I receive the romanian marriage certificate and after holidays I will go and apply for romanian passport!..

So yes, you need some documentation showing her new last name and also her russian ID card...

But for more information check out the Russian consulates in US!!
