Its a bit much calling them whackos. Most of them are quite normal. I find the truly whacked out ones are clinging to environmentalism like a religion and have somehow reached a point of desperation. Not unlike Bush when he goes into one of his praying trances after a particularly rough cabinet meeting.

Cows are a byproduct of modern society. They produce huge amounts of methane and use tones of energy to produce relatively small amounts of food. I don't think Id call the study of such issues whacky. Especially if there is something we can do to their diet to reduce the amount of methane produced.

The press of course picks up on the fart joke every time they run the story. I guess they are appealing to the masses.

that could have been in this country, the labour government just about tax everything but that, so why not, probably gordon Brown will read that and think it is a great idea

I hate taxes as much as anybody but this is a perfectly legitimate idea. No different from gas taxes or sin taxes.

You laugh now, but won't it be so much funnier when they start taxing people who pass more flatus than average? Maybe we will all have to line up for personal "emissions tests" at the same time we get our vehicles inspected. That would be so awesome...life would just be one big non-stop fart joke. I hope I'll get an inspection sticker to put on my bum.
