War crimes are in the eye of the beholder. And there is very little that Amnesty International can do except make proclamations.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

One may recall that Amnesty International was shown to have done a rather bad "fauxtography" exhibition in 1995 as the basis of one of its proclamations.

Again its interesting how we accept Amnesty International's word about human rights violations when it comes to the oppressive regimes, but not when it criticises us or (now) our allies.

Hezbollah and its backers probably are bad guys in all this, but Israel still made some questionable military decisions by bombing power stations, main roads and other aspects of the civilian infrastructure. Turning around and blaming Hezbollah for the subsequent civilian suffering seems a little questionable to me. People can't leave if a) they have nowhere to go and; B) if the transport links are crippled.

For once I have to agree with erekose Israel in this was is a loser

Opposition chairman Binyamin Netanyahu called for the formation of a state commission of inquiry on Tuesday to investigate the mistakes of the war in Lebanon.

Netanyahu made a point of acting statesmanlike during the war and even served as a frequent spokesman for Israel in the foreign press. But he changed his direction Tuesday by criticizing the way the war was handled.

"We have to learn lessons from the war," Netanyahu said in an interview with Channel 2. "With this many inadequacies, there is no choice but to form a state commission of inquiry. If we don't learn lessons, there will be another round [of war] that will not end well for Israel."

I hope you're not suggesting the clearly bomb shattered cities of Southern Lebanon didn't precipitate more than a small amount of human suffering

i believe what i said above was quite clear........

sigh...for being so bright sometimes you are quite dense.

the pic in that one article was staged for the benefit of the photographer. i'm not saying that the coffins are not real, or that they don't contain dead people, or that bombing didn't occur. i am saying i've seen reports on this very photo, citing how the women are wedged between the coffins and the wall, with the large numbers painted above the coffins. all for the benefit of the photo opportunity.....

In a widely-circulated photo taken last month and distributed by Agence France Press, two older, hijab-clad Lebanese women are wailing in front of caskets. Dozens of caskets, actually. The caskets were lined up against a wall, and numbers were spray-painted on the wall. Somehow, the women had wedged themselves into the narrow space between the coffins and the wall, and the numbers conveniently appeared directly behind them—guaranteed to be in any photo.

The problems with the photo are obvious. Why would the women force their way into a crevice, when they could more easily face both the caskets and the wall? Quite simply, that shot wouldn’t capture both the mourning faces and the numbers signifying the enormity of the tragedy. And on the topic of the numbers, the ones spray-painted on the wall were the kind used in the west, not in South Lebanon, thus erasing any doubt about the photo-op’s intended audience.

This photo, though, was not taken by an Arab freelancer or some hack Westerner. It was shot by award-winning photographer Marco Di Lauro, who won praise for his work with Marines in Iraq. The benign—and probably correct—interpretation is that he just wasn’t suspicious enough.

I wasn't focussing on the photo - but on the Amnesty report. What's your conclusion then - that the majority of the humanitarian suffering is grossly exaggerated or otherwise made up?
