An Interview with John Morton (Director of ICE)

I found this article interesting as it gave some insight into the Director of ICE's thinking when he wrote the memo urging Immigration Officers to cancel deportation of Immigrants who were married to US citizens.

He was asked about his thinking on the recent memo that urged Immigration Officers to cancel deportations, "

"When you start removing people who have been here for 25 years," he said, "it isn't so simple. There is a whole life wrapped up in this person, much of it lawful and positive like the fact that they raised kids here. This is someone's parent, grandparent. We have to ask, 'Is removal the only remedy?' No. And it might not be the best remedy in all cases. As a career prosecutor, I believe in enforcing the law. But I also believe there are multiple ways of doing that, and that it has to be done with the maximum amount of discretion and common sense."

which I think is very positive and makes sense.

Now Im wondering what the memo regarding those who arrived on VWP and want to adjust for the same reasons will be. Remember the decision to deny is solely in the hands of the Immigration Officers so regardless of the fact that VWP waive the right to an appeal...Perhaps based on the discretion part the memo could encourage approvals when there is the ability to adjust.

Let them stay in New Jersey, somewhere between Orange and Hoboken, and re-apply.

Then, if they have the resilience to last the wait there, they really deserve to stay anyway.
