I've meet a few people from Vermont and they are great folks.

Nothing like the resident Vermonters on here who ironically moved there from red states.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Perhaps we could build a wall around Vermont and sell it to China to pay off our debt?

We like Vermont. I think it should become part of Canada. We would move there in a second.

All you Vermont lovers are messing up this thread. Begone!

Vermont bores me. I don't care about it. Besides, its hospital parking lots are full of "Je me souviens" license plates. I know, because I read it on VJ so it must be true.

I think Vermont wishes they were part of Canada.

Full is somewhat over exaggerated.

Rubbish everyone goes there, it's a well know libertarian fact.

WILLISTON, Vt. -- Vermont's Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Dubie is conceding the race to his Democratic opponent Peter Shumlin.

Dubie made the announcement at a Wednesday morning news conference at his Williston campaign headquarters.

FYI I voted for Pat Leahy and Peter Welch. Both Democrats. Leahy is the 2nd ranking member of the Senate and has a lot of clout. We actually prefer you do not pay attention to that. Vermont has tons more political pull than a state with a population of 600,000 has any business having, and it is thanks to Leahy. No freshman Republican could ever do as well.

Also bear in mind that Vermont is the ONLY state to legalize Gay marriage by LEGISLATION, not by court ruling. We did so with a REPUBLICAN governor. One should not cloud the parties within state politics. Do not assume a Republican in Vermont is a ** any more than a Democrat in Alabama is a flaming liberal. Howard Dean, former chairman of the national Democrat party and our former Governor was at war with the Dems as much as with Progressives (Republicans have little power in Montpelier anyway) yet is a super strong supporter of the 2nd amendment, one of the strongest you will ever find.

There was not much to choose between them, really and both have been very influential in Vermont politics up until now, so no big changes are coming. I could go either way. Vermont is a strong "blue state" but we seem to switch between Repubs and Dems for Governors (we just had a 4 term Republican governor yet Vermont is the ONLY state George Bush never visited) and it really makes little difference in terms of policy.

we just do not have a lot of "issues" here. Illegal immigration is virtually not a problem at all despite having an international border, crime is nothing (hard to run on a "tough on crime" stance when there is no crime. The Republican tried it  ) Unemployment is under 6%, still bad for us, but not so bad really. Foreclosures? where? Here? Home prices have been stable and occupancy is high. (prices are not going up but not going down) so what is to bash the other over? Abortion? Non-issue. Gun-control? You must be joking, there IS no gun control and we don't need any. Environment? non-issue here, Everyone agrees, keep the air and water clean. The biggest issue was whether to keep Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power plant open (YES we have a nuclear power plant in southern Vermont, northern Vermont is hydro power from Quebec)That was about it. We have a state deficit that wouldn't buy breakfast for the California legislative delagation.

It isn't that no one cares, it is that it really doesn't matter.

It is Wednesday after the election, I am in Vermont, and I am Happy. You?

And that little state has the same amount of Senators as big ol California.

Yes, but ours is far more powerful than California's. And the second one is a Socialist and says so. THAT's nads, my friend!

Our good Canadian neighbors depend on the Green Mountain Boys in their F-16s (one of the most elite of all state guard units going back to our revolution...we TRAIN the 10th Mountain division on Mt Mansfield) to be the first planes over Canada in case of emergency. This way they have more of their money for health care. We will soon have F-35s, thanks to Leahy. Only the best to protect the US and Canada. They can be over Montreal in under 30 seconds, they are constantly in the air.

Our governor and the Quebec Premier have historically had very close ties and while neither Quebec NOR Vermont really wants to be part of Canada ( ) we cooperate very well and welcome our neighbors and their good Canadian $$$. We do share a couple of big lakes and we get a lot of of power from HydroQuebec.

It is a gloriously beautiful state that I marvel at every day when I drive around. I never fail to see something just truly breathtaking every day. The people are wonderful and really are a "live and let live" sort of folk.

I think Y'all are just jealous. :P

And because we have the same number of Senators, but less population than a small city in CA, you can bump into Leahy or Sanders at the grocery store or walking at the lakefront. Alla exchanges photos with him (they are both amateur photo buffs) and we, our family, were invited to meet the governor with Leahy and Sanders when they were here for health care public hearings last summer (yeah, ME, Mr. Anti-health care  ) We got the grand tour of the state house and the boys got a history lesson on how government in the US and Vermont works. They were thrilled. I can walk into either of their offices any time and be treated like a friend and assited Leahy's office with wording to, hopefully, make your immigration process easier (I don't like the rest of the new bill though)but if it passes intact you will be able to get vaccinations and the I-693 signed off by any licensed physician. I have yet to meet a man more dedicated to the people of his state than Pat Leahy. He gets my vote forever and I will argue with him forever!

I feel sorry for the rest of you.

It is beautiful country up there. Used to go park many times in Champlain and my then girlfriend from Montreal used to come get me. Spent many times and days in the area. Afterwards when I got back to my truck I would be given a load to go get picked up in St Albans to head southward or west. Can't remember the company for sure but I believe it was batteries but it was many years ago now and may be wrong. I also remember that Northern New York and Vermont people were nice and friendly but not so much in the southern part of the states and I found that strange. The main thing I remember is it was beautiful country up there but cold as can be in winter. Also a lot of Canadians did head into Vermont but didn't know why until you showed the hospital. I do know that my girlfriend and her friend would go into the states for medical care sometimes and it was paid by the Canadian health insurance.
