Not sure if this has been answered yet but my fiance Arrived in the United States at JFK airport NY last month. They gave her a work authorization in her passport. We immediately (2 days ) later went and applied for a social security card. They said she was not registered in the system here at our local social security office. They said wait three weeks and come back if she does not receive it. Its been a month and we went back today still the same problem, they said come back in 4 weeks if she does not receive a work authorization or card.

Is this normal for a K1 Fiance visa?

My fiance is upset its taking so long because she wants to work.

How long does it usually takes to be registered in the system before getting a social security card?

Thanks

Did they submit a social security number application?

I went today to apply for SSN -- in Jamaica. 155-10 Jamaica Ave.

No problem encountered.

I just showed my marriage cert , passport and I-94.

I arrived Sept 22 and I applied today that's bout 3 weeks after I arrived.

It is right once you arrived in the USA you need to wait 2 weeks before applying

so the first application is understandable.. the second time you went to apply for SSN

plus the application form.

that I think she needs to clear with them... present her I94 and visa.

ahhh.. so she was given a reciept..disregard my previous post.

I think what you should do is keep calling them everyday to check out what happened

to her SS Card.. they prolly sent it or was misplaced some other mailbox...

I am happy for you and your marriage. And thank you for the reply. For some reason they keep saying my fiance is not showing up in the system. Do you think we should have gotten married faster? My Fiance arrived here early September and was planning on a wedding in November. Would that be the problem?

If you're not showing up in the system then they should send a paper based request to verify you in SAVE. Do you know if they have done that?

Ok since she did not wait the 10 days to allow her info to show up in the DHS data base SSA checks to verify immigration status, there was no info when the SSA office first checked. What they are then supposed to do is wait until she has been here 10 days and again try the initial verification. If that still doesn't verify, they are supposed to submit a secondary electronic verification. That normally takes around a week. If immigration responds that they want to see the immigration document, a photocopy of the front and back if the I-94 is mailed along with Form G-845 to the verification office and then the G-845 is mailed back to the SSA office with the response marked on the form. Figure on that taking a month.

So you need to find out where in the process she is and if needed, make sure they go to the next step.

yes we received a receipt with reference number to follow up with. Would that be the same as them saving her information in the computer?

Thanks so much for your help.

Yes the agent made copies of her passport & 1-94 front and back, and said we have to wait 4 weeks. The agent never mentioned anything about a G-845 form. Would that need to be filled out by us?

They do it for you. If I were you I'd go back to make sure they have sent it. The first time I applied I didn't make sure and the incompetent people at my local office didn't send the form off. Now I'm left several months later having to wait for a SSN based upon my EAD eligibility. I'm still in the process of waiting for the response from the G-845 form from an application I made 3 weeks ago.

Your fiancee CANNOT WORK until she has her EAD or GC. The stamp in her passport is simply pretty to look at. It is of no value to your fiancee to work. You will need to get married and then she will need to file AOS and apply for an EAD and AP. Once she has her EAD or GC, THEN she can work.

Sorry.

As for the SSN. You should wait about 2 weeks to get "in the system" before applying. I would think they're not doing something about it seeing it's taking so long (should be done by now) so I would continue to call to follow up on the process. It'll be handy for opening bank accounts, health insurance etc, but until she gets her EAD or GC, she cannot work.

You can get married faster if you like, up to you. But it won't do anything to speed up the SSN process... it will only mean you can file AOS quicker and thus ACTUALLY get permission to work.

WOW I never knew SS would be this screwed up.

My fiance actually went this morning to check to see if they sent the G-845 form along with the I-94 and they told her to wait 4 weeks with no explanation if it was sent or not.

I actually called also and they said they can't do anything over the phone and you need to come in.

This process is truly frustrating.

Thanks for all the support & help
