Easy solution: install Firefox.

The only problem with Firefox is things on some Websites don't work correctly with Firefox. For instance, the music clips on Amazon.com will not play with Firefox or at least I can't get them to work. My printer has a quick Website print bar that will not install on Firefox. On the Plus side I like the little add-ons you can install with Firefox.

I also use the Thunderbird e-mail program and I like that better that Outlook.

There is an IE engine plug in that you can have it set to always run IE for any page you want. You just right-click and tell it to always open up the page you are on.. or just click the button and it will switch engines on the fly. neat.

Oh boy, I'm so very sorry I stuck around to read that last post before I go...

I can be gone for a couple of months, and the same old ####### has to be dredged up when I get back? Could we PLEASE just leave it alone??? Everyone hated all the "drama" I created, and controversy, etc etc, but I come back to OT to pose a computer question and the same old stuff has to be rehashed. No, I didn't start that thread--Sarah wanted to and I don't blame her, because that's what SHE wanted to do. I decided to comment on it because my name was brought up in that thread long before I was around on it. I was really down on this place back then, there are still aspects of it I find really revolting, but other aspects I love. So...here I am. Do you think we could just leave the past in the past about all the #######?? If you were worried about Cerise knowing blah blah blah, then why not just PM her, or tell her when you speak to her? Hrm.

Anyway, that is all...be back later and thanks to everyone again for the helpful suggestions. M.

ah mich... just ignore the every day VJ trolls... these kinds stay to create drama... rehash drama... drama runs as blood through their veins...

hope you get the IE problem fixed soon...

I don't recall Michelle herself creating a huge dramatic exit (or even saying herself she was leaving...). I figured she was on a break.

Forgive_and_forget_by_pickletoez.jpg

cerise, i think this was when you weren't around as much and had just gotten into things at work!! but of COURSE there was some drama!!!!!

Ok...my last post blah, blah, blah ...

Ah. I was actually on that thread...I guess I just didn't read past the page where I posted. Or remembered. Guess it just was SSDD for me. ;) Thanks for the heads up.

Michelle, as I said before, welcome back. However, why shouldn't Monique post to me on here? It wasn't Monique who brought up your being back initially on page one, and as you can see from other comments, she's not the only one who noticed you're back with much less fanfare than you left. It was out there already and it's going to be discussed; you have to know it will. I don't think her posting a reply to my comment makes any of all this ####### more dramatic than the majority of the parties have already done so.

Ok, I see two main things.

O21 - SSODL: SysTray.Exgr - {5368D1FC-4F5C-4f1b-B134-E67214FC78E9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\lcbdqgcc.dll

That needs to go away.

Also, you do not have Service Pack 2 installed. That leaves you open to just about everything, really. However, SP2 is huge and you say you're about out of disk space. Windows needs enough disk space to not only install SP2, but also to back up the current configuration, etc. Figure on needing 1GB of space as a minimum. SP2, if I remember correctly, is around 300MB or so.

Nothing else in the scan seemed to be "nasty" in intent.

So, here's what I would do, in order:

1) Delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\lcbdqgcc.dll

2) Reboot

3) Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > General :: Delete Cookies :: Delete Files :: Clear History

4) Close everything on your computer but a browser

5) Go to: http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

6) Run the free scan from Panda and let me know if it finds anything.

7) Delete everything you don't need!!!! Try to get at least 1GB free

8) Download SP2 - you aren't getting automatic updates, at least not recent ones, if SP2 isn't installed. ie: you've got a broken-arsed copy of XP right now.

IMO, Panda is the best AV software to purchase. It's expensive though. Cost-wise, you can't beat free, so head over to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 and download AVG free edition.

Also IMO, Ewido is the best spyware/malware scanner out there. It integrates with AVG (in fact, I think AVG bought Ewido...) and finds pretty much everything. It works better than Spybot, in my experience. Adaware is still worth having, though - just as a backup scan.

Let me know if Panda finds anything.

Thanks Lynne, (F) and everyone who tried to help with the original question.

Admittedly, I let myself fall back into my old VJ role of defending already, (so, sorry 'bout that) but I AM able to check that at this point, because it's just too tiring. I have better things to do most of the time. I know what I'm like as a person, so do my friends, and as for the others I know I can't change their opinions of me (I probably have the same opinion toward some of them, and they don't try to change that--so why, right? Maybe we can agree on that small point at least--I'll just ignore posts that are meant to be confrontational at this point. I haven't come back to rehash anything in our personal life, (we're good, thanks!) I've come back because I miss some of the people here, it's a good place for information, and sometimes it's just a way to pass time! If anyone does have anything confrontational to say to me about past issues, I will ask that you please PM me, and just let me get on with things here for goodness sakes.

Off to download Firefix again....M.

Just saw your post--thanks MUCH Cian!

I will be doing that later tonight...will follow your steps, but I'm a bit worried about the 1GB thing...I think that will be fairly impossible rightnow, but I'll check in myadd/delete programs and see what I can do. This computer was made in 2000, and it only had FOUR GB total!!! I know, ancient! This will just be a backup puter in another six weeks or so, but I would really like it to be running properly. At least by THEN, I will be able to delete a lot of what's on it and download pack2 for sure...because the main things we use will be on the new one anyway.

I'll do those steps you told me about late tonight (off here now at mo') and I'll post then. Really appreciate you doing this. M.

PS...as I said, the EWIDO cut out twice near the end, so I never got to delete anything from that. Should I tryto run that again, too then, or just the Panda thing? Thanks...

Cian,

Ok...I've done a few things tonight. I downloaded Firefox again, so I was able to complete the Ewido scan using that. Oh, it only found *237* things..HOLY #######! Lol...hrm..well, um..not funny, really! (about 10-15 high risk things, and the rest were tracking cookies) Anyway, removed those things, but the Panda scan showed 22 more...guess it missed some things. I saved the report, and this is what it said:

Sooooooooooooo. Not sure what to do from here...will probably try to run Adaware too, just to see. I'll let you know how it goes on the SP2, but when I looked into add/remove programs, I don't even see many with very many MB there...could delete Java and a few things for Corey's MP3 player, but not sure that's going to provide me with enough space to download the pack...will try though.

Thanks again!!! :) Michelle

Ok. I'm going to free up that space you need, as well as remove all of the remaining nasties. I didn't think it would be enabled on a machine with that tiny of a hard drive (my KEYCHAIN flash drive is 4GB.....)

Go to:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System :: System Restore

Click the "Turn Off System Restore on all drives". If it gives you an "Are you sure?" message, say yes.

This will completely delete the "backup" copy of your computer. Is this bad? No. As you can see, if you were to restore Windows from the backup, you would be installing viruses.

Those are ALL bad. Very bad.

Even worse, some are in your registry, so I'm going to have to teach you how to clean out the registry as well.

Ok, after you've turned off System Restore, reboot the computer. After it has booted, click the "Start" button, select "Run" and type in "regedit". You'll see a whole bunch of jibberish. lol

Collapse any open folders, and look for "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" (That's the HKCU of the location). Then open the "software" folder. Look for a "xjado" or "xjado fr" folder. (Not sure exactly how to read this style of log) Delete it. (Normal way....right-click then delete)

Go back to the "software" folder and open the Microsoft folder. Find an "OLE##Microsoft Windows" or "OLE" folder (again, not sure how to read those results) and delete it.

Now, collapse all of the folders. Click on "My Computer" Click "Edit". Click "Find". Type "xjado" in the search box, make sure all 3 boxes in "Look at" are checked, and click "Find Next". We want to make sure there aren't any more hiding in any of the other registry folders.

If you find any more of them, delete them. Then reboot your computer again. Check your available disk space. If you have close to 800MB available, go ahead and try to download and install SP2. I can't stress enough how important SP2 is. It was essentially a complete re-write of XP. That's how badly XP SP1 sucked. If there still isn't room, then you'll just have to make due.

My next suggestion would be to, even if you're going to use the old computer only occasionally in a month or so, buy a new hard drive. You can get an 80GB hard drive for $50-$60. You could then use your old computer as a real backup computer. ie: network it and backup your "My Documents" folder to it every other night or so. Just a thought.

Let me know how it goes after you've done all of the "turning off S.R. and registry hacking" stuff.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
