Need two boring econ classes for my degree. This class is International Trade. You guys are so smart, can you help me think of a topic to write on that has a decent amount of info and is interesting?

Here is the assignment:

Instructions for the Research Proposal – For only ECON 508 Students

1. Content:

a. An acceptable research proposal must examine the relationship between

at least two variables, one of which should be related to international

trade. Your proposal should be about an interesting issue that answers a

relevant question. It should include an abstract, brief introduction,

literature review, and research question sections. Students are encouraged

to schedule a meeting with me to discuss their project ideas.

b. Below you can find couple of hot topics that scholars have extensively

published about. You can choose one of these topics or do research on

other topic of yours as long as you discuss it with me.

i. Immigration

ii. Remittances

iii. Foreign Direct Investment

iv. Trade Openness

v. Exchange Rates

vi. Inter- vs. Intra-Industry Trade

vii. Protectionism (Tafiffs, Quotas, Non-Tariff Barriers)

viii. Bilateral Trade Agreements

ix. Trade of Natural Resources (Oil, gas etc.)

x. IMF, World Bank

xi. Multinational Firms, Globalization

He is flexible on topics, but it must be related to international trade. It can be about any region in the world or maybe just a couple countries. :crying:

1. singapore 'branded' remarketing

2. singapore petroleum refining operations vs malaysian (malacca, penang, jahore) straights piracy.

3. sabine pass purchase by Temasek Holdings and what it means for the Texas ship-focused economy.

any one of those should be about 22,000 words, with 18 to 24 citable sources.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

There's always disputes between the US and Canada, that would cover both Protectionism and Trade of Natural Resources (softwood lumber, for example). That sounds a bit boring to me, but I never did like my Econ courses in Uni.

vii. Protectionism (Tafiffs, Quotas, Non-Tariff Barriers)

This one is dirt easy to do. Plenty of research around supporting it.

Are colleges here really that open here? I had to spend days just deciphering what the heck the college professor wanted out of a sentence or two.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Yes, that writeup is pretty typical.

You're kidding me? How many words is the norm? Do you have to support all opinions using academic journals?

I wish I had an assignment topic to post, they were a ###### and involved careful analysis of a sentence or two. Trying to figure out what they want exactly.

No, not kidding. And it's not about the number of words. It's about the professor leaving no ambiguity as to what he or she is expecting.

Do you have to support all opinions using academic journals?

Or an independent analysis of your own. In my paper for my Econometrics class, I basically did an extensive Matlab analysis of variables to determine correlation. I found none and that was my conclusion. No correlation. Kinda lame in hindsight but I suppose the point was to demonstrate I understood the concepts and knew how to use the software.

Our assignments were usually either an essay, report or case study. For example, critically analyze the following statement: In the current global financial crisis, various countries feel the necessity to enact tariffs and trade barriers to protect local industries.

A report would be approx three thousand words and every single opinion has to be backed by an academic journal. Using opinion alone resulted in a fail grade; which is ironic considering you guys give me ####### about sourcing things.

Every unit [course] also had an exam, which was between 40% to 80% of the overall grade.

Because you don't source stuff here. Not that you have to. This is just vj.

LoL, You don't source anything. You post your opinion and try to pass off conjecture that you heard from some friend of a friend who is an expert as legitimate fact. Too bad your university's strict adherence to citing references and supporting your opinion with respected sources didn't continue to these boards, or even Expats.

Another good idea, very topical in terms of current trends in IT offshoring, is the effect of the VAT in Europe on the rate at which IT organizations offshore work versus those in the US.

I source everything, you just do not like the source. Even when the source is reputable by your own standards, I then apparently do not get the data.

You also fail to grasp that some topics are controversial, so naturally no college or government is going to research them. As long as a study has been conducted fairly and professionally, I do not rule it out because of the source as you do - which is disingenuous.

The problem with you guys on here though is that you will complain about sources hourly, even ones from various organizations. Yet, you will accept opinion pieces from people with nothing more than liberal arts degrees that support your own views, as sound science.

Thats a fat load of ####### BY, and you know it. You haven't posted a legitimate source in quite some time. You going to post more American Renaissance #######? Carry on Mungo.

That sounds like the boring econ courses I took (to fill "elective" requirement) in UCalgary--were the topics largely better-suited to short-answer than to lots-of-bs essay? Edited by Saddle Bronc
