Or does it signify gratitude and respect by those offering the encouragement that, had she been there to attend the rally and not for anthropological purposes, she braved likely ridicule and dismissal of her presence as irrelevant by those intrinsically prejudiced against the Tea Party to do so?

My point was only that if her presence elicited specific reactions, it indicates that her presence was unusual. I don't know what the back-patters were thinking. She was uncomfortable with it, and felt that people were being weirdly paternalistic and kind of creepy. I was born and raised in D.C. and you don't just...touch people. She was unsettled that people felt entitled to pat her approvingly, but never engaged her in a regular conversation as they would anybody else.

I would guess that many tea partiers feel a fair amount of defensiveness around the fact that their movement is so white, and enjoyed the presence of a person of color more for their own sakes than for hers.

Maybe the folks there understood her minority presence and were trying to be comforting. MLK's daughter spoke there and there was tons of black gospel singing going on. Maybe they should have bussed in a bunch of black people just so you could "feel" better? The new racism : encouragement!

What I don't understand is why race is even brought up anymore. If we truly want to move past racism, lets stop identifying people by race. There's a term I relly like to use - "American." Pretty much covers all of us.

I feel fine, really. I don't have the energy to go into why MLK's daughter was there, or why gospel singers were called in, or why your "bussing black people" comment is humorous. What do you care? You a tea partier? It's a largely white movement with fringe racists in the mix. Glenn Beck is a loon. Is this news?

Actually it is hard to do... for some.

Over the years I have evolved in realizing that this struggle will never end, in fact the friction only seems to increase.

It's just a reality we must all some how deal with as best we can.

There are many creative ways to respond. Pretending the issue doesn't exist isn't one of them. I'm encouraged to hear that you realize it's a living situation.
