Just confirming, as per the VJ guides it says we should wait a couple weeks after PoE to apply for my SSN since it won't be in the system yet. Our wedding date is (hopefully) going to be 2 weeks to the day from the PoE, so is it okay to wait til after and use the new last name?

I applied my SSN a week after my POE with my maiden name (name in my passport) as per advice by our fellow VJ members. The system will update the name of your fiance in her maiden name and if she applies after you got married on her new (married) name you might have difficulty getting SSN and might have to wait for her EAD before she could get a SSN or worst wait for her GC to get SSN. I suggest to apply SSN on her maiden name and change it after to her married name once she gets her GC.

I suggest 2 weeks after POE date (gives CBP/DSH/SAVE computers time to sync up)

then apply in VISA NAME

about 60 days after POE date, come back, put in 'name change' at SSA office, showing marriage certificate.

Less hassle, when done this way.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Okay getting mixed messages here. Our 2 week point is the day of our wedding, don't think we'll be doing it that day. Why would the marriage certificate not be good enough for proof of name change? Kevin wants to wait to do it until after we get the certificate which he's guessing will be another couple weeks after the wedding, making it 1 month after PoE. (And yes I am the female fiance, going crosseyed trying to read "she" as "you" lol.) Really what's the rush for the SSN, it's not like I can use it for anything soon anyway.

Note this is all Kevin's opinion. *I* want to do it asap. But, he's the driver and we need to be able to work around his work schedule.

I entered 21st, married 26th and then applied for SSN with marriage certificate and passport a few days later and had no issues getting it in my married name, it just took 4 weeks to get it in the mail. So far iv only needed my SSN for adding my name on the bank account. Got my car ins without it and my marriage license without it.

We waited to get the SSN after the wedding and honeymoon. We just brought my passport and the marriage certificate and it was enough. It took about 3 weeks to get the SSN. I would wait because I wouldn't want to have to go back to get it changed to my married name. We did end up needing the SSN to get me added to the bank accts. But it was still worth waiting. The Social Security office isn't a place I enjoyed waiting at for hours and hours. hehe. Why add the stress of it before your wedding?
