You gave them your official birth certificate and not a copy? Better start working at getting another one.

I had to send the original because they requested it...at my interview I only had short form and they neeed long form. So I had to courier the birth cert with my passport. I took a copy. Is there no way to get it back from the airport? What do they do with all the stuff in the brown envelope?!

Should have sent them the copy. The contents of the brown envelope are in your permanent file. The next time you see that file will be at your AOS interview (if you have one) and then you may or may not be able to get it back, or a copy of it.

Better to just try to get another birth certificate.

You can send a copy with the AOS application, the USCIS usually expects copies of everything except required forms anyway. You'll probably just need to pay and get a new birth certificate in the end, though, in case you ever need it in the future for something else, or just in case.

get another one from the officials in UK, do not even bother with the US consulate or USCIS. Here, you can get an official BC in a matter of days, I would imagine Engliand is about the same. You won't even get a human with a functioning brain at any of those agencies before then.

When you get a new REAL birth certificate...make copies. DO NOT EVER send originals

Yes. The copy will be fine.

Consulates ask for the original, a COPY and a translation (if needed) In the UK they speak a language closely resembling English and usually do not need translations. At the interview they should keep the copy and give back the original.

To others...DO NOT leave the consulate until you get the original back
