Hi, I'm Canadian, and I have a girfriend who is American.

We made a plan that I would visit her in the States for a week, but we got denied at the border because I couldn't show ties to Canada. (I live with my parents and I don't go to school, or have a job). We had to go in for questioning. They told me I wasn't banned, but that we had to turn around, which sucked, to say the least.

We'll be travelling together, by car.

Anyways, if I get a job, and show them a phone bill in my name, and a lease, will that be sufficient to get across the border?

How could I prove that I have a job?

Any help would be very appreciated, thank you!

Its more than just a job and showing phone bill/s. Ties to Canada could be Schooling, Immediate Family, Long Track Goood Job, Property, Car, Land, Children, just some good examples. How i wish that a job & a phone bill would cut the cake.

How could I prove that I have a job?

Easy - A Letter from your Employer (Preferred), Recent Pay Stub/s

Any help would be very appreciated, thank you!

As someone who's been denied before, you'll now have to show substantial ties to be allowed to return to the US. You can expect to be pulled back into secondary screening where your ties will be scrutinized

Honestly, not having a job, a lease of your own, or going to school - plus a girlfriend in the US, I'm not surprised you were denied. A phone bill in your name isn't ties to Canada. That can be cut off at any time or easily walked away from

If you get a job, you can show paystubs and a letter from an employer with an expected return date. But I'd work on getting more evidence

I know it stinks - we Canadians take for granted our leisurly access to the US border. It stings when we get turned around

Good luck

I also was denied entry when entering the US driving. Since then I have been back and forth 2 times but went by airplane. I took a letter from an employer. A RETURN TICKET is a MUST!!! They want to know that you have enough money to support yourself during your visit. Proof of a bank account is sometimes asked for. All they asked me was how much money I had with me, and how much in the bank and if I had credit cards. I'm hoping to travel again to the US soon. I will wait for my NOA2 to come and take that along with the above mentioned things and hope and pray I get through. Be honest with them and look them in the eye when talking. Best of luck!

A letter of employment is good proof, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's required proof. They're not looking to establish that you're employed - they're looking for proof that you have ties to Canada that will compel you to return. A lease is good proof, as are utility bills, bank statements, proof of enrollment in school, etc. If you were just entering with your girlfriend just to visit for a short period of time, it seems a bit odd that they would turn you away, but it can happen. If you're flying, definitely make sure you have a return ticket; I handed the CBP a printed copy of my itinerary when I passed through since it's one less question for then to ask (length of stay). When providing proof of ties, it should be strong ties that are not easily abandoned; a cell phone bill is not a strong enough tie unfortunately.
